Tonight's programme featured a slightly grubby G plate R129 500SL, bought from Car Burgess for £5500. £2000 on a professional detail plus new headlining in the hard top and new indicators, then sold on for just under £10k:

1990 Mercedes 500SL R129 SOLD | Car And Classic

Nice looking car but I thought there was something odd about the wheels ... explained in the ad above, which mentions 25mm spacers fitted to all four wheels. A cheap way to 'fill the arches' I guess!

DOH! Missed it! :(

£2k on a detail!! :O

The detail was done by a company that specialised in restoring classic Jags ... the cars in their workshop were stunning. The £2k did include replacing the headlining on the hard top and switching the front indicators from clear to the correct orange ones.

The other car on the programme was a Fiat 130 coupe, which I must admit I'd never heard of before. That needed a huge amount of work e.g. £20k spent on bodywork and paint but sold for £40k. Nice looking car (Pininfarina design) and super-rare in RHD. It was their shot at the '70s 'executive' market (a BMW/Merc rival) ... 3.2 V6 with 165bhp.

Proper tyres.

Not heard of a Fiat 130 coupé ;)? Superb cars in their day. Saloon was quite impressive as well. Whilst Fiat's bodywork wasn't necessarily the best, they did have some good cars at times, the Dino coupé was another good one. A few not-so-good cars as well, though :D.

I can't believe that many don't know the 130 Coupe !! Featured in so many classic car mags down the years ! Not known for its rustproofing , but a great car nonetheless

I had a Fiat 126, which was obviously very similar ... well, it had two doors :D

Fiat 130 coupe's are amazing looking cars with velour aplenty usually, however i have never heard of one going for £40 000. They usually struggle to make £10 000 in reality.

This one was absolutely immaculate after the rebuild and was bought by a collector. Many of the parts are no longer available - both the interior door handles had broken (cheap metal, poor design), so they had new ones cast in bronze then machined and chromed. Headlamps were dismantled and all the reflectors stripped and re-silvered. Etc.

Found some pictures of the 130 coupe. As bought:

After restoration. Interesting that they ditched the black/silver number plates (perfectly legal on a 1972 car):

A proper mafia staff car !

Edit - I wonder if anyone has the registration number MAF 1A. ?
It would be kind of cool on a black Quattroporte , or even a W100 .

There’s a very run-down house in a very expensive road in Whetstone, north London that has about half a dozen 126 Coupes in various states of disrepair in the front garden.
