I have a 2016 GLC and added carplay from Joyeauto. Works flawlessly

The C-Class only got Apple CarPlay from the factory as of the facelift model year 2019.

If you have an earlier C-Class, then it won't have factory-fitted Apple CarPlay.

Said that, forum sponsor @Alfie at www.commandonline.co.uk can fit a third-party device that will add Apple CarPlay to your 2017 car. You can contact them directly for prices and availability.

Ok thank you both for your input

As mentioned above, you’ll need to have install a third party (kenwood, Sony, etc.) piece of kit

Is easy to install what actually is it a module off some sort then

Any third party module installation will require the removal of the COMAND/Audio20 system for access to the rear of the unit, plus removal of the centre armrest for access to the USB port, at the very least. In addition you need to be handy with wiring and with reading wiring diagrams. Not impossible, but not ideal if it's your first DIY task....

Mine arrived, followed the instructions and all works. Brilliant to use

Sounds complicated

Mine was simple. Plug the device into the ODBC under the drivers side, follow instructions on screen - done. Took 10 mins to do the ODBC upgrade

Ok don’t mind plugging the module in etc but I don’t fancy taking the unit out and wiring

There's a difference between using an OBDII module for activating the Apple CarPlay feature on cars that came with factory-fitted Apple CarPlay, and adding a seperate hardware device to cars that didn't come with factory-fitted Apple CarPlay. The former is simple, the latter required some dismantling and rewiring.

To the OP:

If your C-Class is W205 pre-facelift (2014-2018), then it does not have factory-fitted Apple CarPlay, and will require a third-party hardware device in order to add Apple CarPlay functionality.

If your C-Class is W205 post-facelift (2018- ), then it has built-in Apple CarPlay which can be easily activated.

I hear that upcoming iPhones will be portless instead of the wished for move from lightning connector to usb-c. If this is true and they are going fully wireless, then it will ruin any legacy CarPlay vehicles that don’t support wireless CarPlay. So you’ll either have to keep your old phone so that you can continue to plug in, or change your car! I sincerely hope they don’t do this but they’ve shown disregard for the needs of old customers many times before. Still.... only a rumour from a “reliable source” [emoji849]

These devices are very very specific to a particular audio-20 headunit that was fitted to the W205/W253. It does not work for all W205/W253 vehicles. Plus, if the car goes in for any form of software update the CarPlay option will vanish.

Mercedes issue very specific guidelines about the retrofitting of CarPlay. If you don't do the job correctly, they will invalidate any warranty on the headunit. OBD activation isnt doing the job properly. Cheap though i'll grant you that.
