This and that.
Anyone got any comments ( ) on buying a Cat D car?

What effect (if any) will it have on insurance, for example?

TIA

There will be a slight reduction of value and you should declare it at policy inception.

Some insurance companies will require an inspection to guarentee the condition and value of the car prior to accepting cover.

My Bro in-law just bought a 56 plate Rav-4 to repair his self, and found a few hidden nasty's and cost him quite a it more to put right than he thought...

ive had a cat D before, the insurance company will know its a cat d so no need to declare it to them! no effect on the premiums, but in case of it being written off again or being stolen, the final payment will be less as they would already have paid out on it once!

The thing you need to consider is when you come to re-sell the vehicle...if somebody does a HPI search and discovers that its been subject to an insurance claim, its likely that they will either walk away or ask for a substantial reduction on the selling price.

Yeah, but the thing I'm looking at is around 20-25% below 'book' anyway, so when I come to sell, I'll just ask correspondingly less for it.

Hello,

I don't think I would spend a lot on a Cat D car, purely for the selling on reasons but for a track car they could be a good buy?

Here's another flood damaged Cat D SL350

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MERCEDES-SL-3...oryZ9855QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

What supprised me was the ML320 CDi's sold for £28,000, sounded a lot to me, there are some VERY low millage genuine cars for £32K

Who know's what it would cost to fix the cat D cars? could have all sorts of problems lurking.

My brother in-law bought a repaired cat D car a few years ago (MX5).Never had any problems with it in the 3 years he kept it.When he did sell it he sold it for not much less than he paid for it.I think it was about £500 less. And the guy who bought it was more than happy with the car.So they are not all doom and gloom.

Just make sure you are 100% happy that you are fully aware of ALL the things that are wrong with the vehicle. The electronics on a modern vehicle can be a nightmare if they go wrong.

Where would we stand if we bought one of these cars and tried to take out a Service Plus warranty? :)

Sorry for showing my ignorance - what is a Cat D ?

How do the categories work ?

Insurance write off categories, according to the type/amount of damage:

* Category A - Vehicle must be crushed. All of it.
* Category B - Car may not be returned to road. Parts may be sold.
* Category C - Repairable. Possibly structural damage. Cost of damage (at main dealer prices and labour rates) is more than book value of car.
* Category D - Repairable. Probably non-structural damage. May have been economic to repair, but insurer doesn't want to.
* Category F - Damaged by fire.
* Category X - Repairable. Minor Damage.

D = the least damaged and does not require re registration or a VIC check
C = more extensive damage but can be repaired and re registered after a VIC check
B = beyond repair but good parts, suitable for breaking only
A = Total loss no good parts must be crushed

I'm evidently not making my position clear.

The car I'm looking at is already repaired, and on the road. It remains "Cat D" (on HPI, for instance), but otherwise, there's nowt wrong with it.

PJ

PS: And it wasn't flood damaged, and it's not a Mercedes

A wise man once said to me that - all cars start their life in bits. So if one has been in an accident, it's the quality of repair that you need to be concerned about.

Depending on the model of car, it's not something that would put me off if the price was right. But then you do need to know your stuff (and personally I always research everything to the nth degree).

Do you know what was wrong with it?
Also when it was written off makes a difference. If it was fairly new it must have had serious damage. On older cars a small scrape is enough.

Not necessarily. Some insurance policies are automatically new replacement in the first 12 months.

I have seen cars with as little damage as a new wing, bumper, wing support and light units be written off.

Some companies have arrangements to supply new vehicles to insurance companies and anything is a write off, I bought a little 850cc van for my brother at £4k under book and 1 year old, the only fault was a dent under the floor by the pedals. It had a clean book

i bought a cat c 230e on a j plate about 3 years ago for £150 it needed a nearside headlight indicator and a front grille and a vic check thats it i repaired it and sold it on for about £600 i think in the next 12 months the guy i sold it too came back to me on about 3 occasions for bits for it cant remember what exactly.after about 14 months he asked if i would be interested in buying it back as he had bought a quattro. i did so for £250 it know had alloys boot spoiler and was very clean tidy and looked after.
i then sold it again to some guys in london village for export to ghana so i wont be buying it back again i reckon.
