Mercedes CLA 180, 1.6 petrol 2013
Hi, I’m currently having issues with my Mercedes CLA 180, 1.6 petrol 2013. The engine light came on last night and started flashing. My exhaust seems to sounds blocked, can feel misfiring and rough idling. I’m assuming it’s the catalyst converter that needs replacing but am unsure of how to find the correct one to fit my car. Can someone advise me on this please. Thanks in advance.

Are you sure it's that? Contrary to what you might hear blocked cats are pretty rare....what codes do you have? If you don't know you need to get them read....anything else is guesswork.

The cat its more likely to be broken rather than blocked . A decent scan tool can measure the cat inlet and outlet temperatures , if they are the same (or almost the same) the cat could be holed through , as was mine in my Petrol Toyota Yaris. Or one (or both) of the sensors is faulty , also pretty simple to diagnose with a decent scan tool.

Here is what mine looked like .

PS : normal rule of thumb is if your EML is red (and/or) flashing do not run the engine for any length of time .

If you absolutely diagnose it's the cat, try Merc for pricing, e.g. Merc of Newcastle via their ebay store and send them your VIN. Merc cats fit correctly, aftermarket repalcements can be a terrible fit. Personally, other than Merc original, if ai had to gone non-Merc (e.g. non available) I'd go to an exhaust fabricator specialist and they will make one up that fits perfectly.

How can I access this eBay store of Mercedes

Just Google them on line , if the part you need is not listed then contact them by phone and if they have the part in stock they will list it on line for you to purchase . Unfortunately they will be shut today I suspect

Silly question ,but have you visually inspected the end of the exhaust (nothing stuck up there) and no obvious damage to the system ?

I did check this, I can’t visibly see this but I just started the car on cold engine and the smoke is kind of splittering out in blocks rather than just smoothly exiting

Go on to eBay. Search for the Newcastle Mercedes eBay store. Your will need to be logged in. Send them a message via eBay asking for what you want and include your VIN, asking for a price for the cat. They will give you a price and say if you want to buy, they will set up a listing and you can 'buy it now' and procure via eBay.

Oh , I am sorry . In your post #1 We thought you were asking for advice on what might be wrong with your car , by post #3 (your post) you still had no clue WTF was going on with your car and by post #6 you had miraculously decided you needed an new cat .

Just go and buy one (and an upstream and downstream sensor) then ,they are widely available , let us know how you get on .

PS From your first post until the one where you had decided your car needed a new cat took less than two hours , including posting on here . You should open a MB workshop.
