Run an HPI report or ask your insurance company, they will know.
A seller isn't obliged to tell you unless you ask them, then they are.
Di you run an HPI report when you bought the car, it's good insurance for finding out about outstanding finance, write off status, etc.
If it all goes pearshaped afterwards you can claim off HPI.

IIRC it's his Wife's car. Maybe he wants to hand it back to the dealer..with the wife still inside..
