Catrol GTX 15W40 Semi Synth @ Asda

Definitely a bargain.

Halfords got it for £21.99 and Euro Car Parts for £20.99

Nice find :)

dont suppose they do 0/40w ?

With a statement like that, it would be nice to have an explanation....

I believe the 320 requires a spec of at least MB229.3 so 229.1 would be lower spec than normal. I personally would not put a lower spec oil in mine but it's up to the individual if you wish to risk it

Today I bought 5L of CarLube 5W/40 fully synthetic oil from GSF for £22 (inc vat). It also meets 229.3. A decent price I thought. They used to sell Fuch oils, but the staff said they stopped selling them as it was too expensive. Seems most customers are very price sensitive.

Aren't we all getting that way!

With a turbocharged engine and normal service interval 229.1 does not cut it. Not recommended by MB according to their own literature.

Mercedes-Benz Specifications for Operating Fluids: Engine Oil, Gear Oil, ATF, Coolant, Brakefluid see SHEET 223.2 page 3

It is very easy for a manufacturer to change minimun specs over time.

Mine has had 229.1 spec oil in it from day one (Dealers). I am sure my handbook states that spec as well. It is currently at 219000miles with no adverse affect on it's reliability or performance, but I do an oil/filter change every 8000miles.

Even Opie Oils only spec 229.1 oil for the standard grade for my engine.

Hi folks, looking to do an oil change on my W211 E 220. I would like to put the best in and I am not price conscious, if you are then you should be driving a fiat in my humble opinion.

If you aren't price conscious, then why not let your local dealer do it for you as they'll charge you a good price

What I drive is my choice and just because I may be conscious of the price of oil I put in the engine, does not mean that I should be driving a Fiat. I see no added benefit in paying over the odds for oil that meets the requirements of my engine for it to be in there for about 8000miles.

If your happy with that, fine!!

Then I must be fine then ;)

BTW this thread was put up to make members aware of an offer Asda are running on oil that meets a particular MB spec, and if there could make use of it, then so be it.

I'm sure folks on here are grateful for your heads up on ASDA'S offer and nobody's criticising your choice of oil for your car. It's quite possible that for a car with your mileage = 219000 miles that a 15w40 semi-synthetic is actually a more appropriate oil. You obviously take care of your car with regular 8,000 mile oil and filter changes. :thumb: - not everybody is able or willing to be so conscientious ! :( You say a 15w40 semi-synthetic meeting 229.1 was the recommended engine oil when the car was first serviced which is fair enough but why would Mercedes change the specification of the recommended oil to 229.3 which normally implies a fully synthetic 5W40~50 ? I would suggest that the newer specification might improve cold starting and running characteristics and thus economy, resistance to thermal breakdown-especially in the turbocharger galleries and extend the useful service life between changes by at least a couple of thousand miles. For folks who don't do their own servicing this may mean a considerable saving in terms of service costs/mileage over the longer term. :dk:

Happy New Year to everyone by the way!:thumb:

That is not the correct oil for your car. Are you sure that MB used 229.1 spec?

I might have Mis posted or someone Mis read. So I will try a different tack. What is the best oil of the right spec, that I can change myself. There that should do it.
