Bad experience with Eurocat

I had a bad experience with Eurocat with my previous C220
the first one I put on started to rattle after 10 months, got a replacement, just didnt fit properley wouldnt seal at the manifold, had that replaced, 12 months down the line it failed the emmissions test, ended up fitting a second hand OE cat, which lasted my time out with the car

I had a Cat go noisy on my V6, this is normally in the lower box, and the ones that rattle, you have 4 CATs 2 in the down pipes and 2 in the first half of the exhaust. A big reason for these cats to fail is if you ever drive over long grass, these things run at 600c if you go over long grass, this causes the outer casing to shrink, and crush the ceramic element before it has had time to cool naturally. I lost mine in a country lane where I reversed onto an grass island to let a tractor come by.

From MB you are looking at £1500 for the two lower CATs

I cut my bottom ones open and removed the Ceramic cat and welded up, the emissions test were OK and I drove it for 6 months like this, however I put 2 after market wire mesh CATs on in order to sell the car, they were a good buy at £600 and fitted perfectly. But the firm that sold them is no more.

Many people have tried after market CATs and most complain that they do not sound as good as the originals. Its a hard decision to make, more and more firms are now making good after market CATs Cant say much else really.

thanks for the advice
i think a gen one would be best but depens on the price
will check with the dealer

replacement cats

i would recomend autobits i bought some cats for my s class 500 fitted perfectly no problems

A decent engine such as a merc will pass emissions without a CAT, my E55 would at nearly 100K, my personal recomendation is to buy a decat pipe for about £100, much cheaper and releases more horse power

As I said earlier, I took my two lower ones out and no problems with MOT, you do have 4 CATs

my mate got a price 0f £854 to day just for the cats genuine
he is going to decide what he is going to do
thanks
