The car had a bit of a rattle fron underneath - so I popped into George Fraser to see what it was - thinking it was a loose ally heat shield or similar.

Nope - its the Cat. Both of them.

"How fuggggggin muuuuuuuuuuuuuch?"

My statement to the merc parts man...

Go on - guess...

140 chassis, twin cat (one for each bank of cylinders)...

£1066 PLUS VAT

Is that including Fitting??? I bet not.

You need someone who can get them Trade mate. ;)

I think I am repeating myself here, as this has popped up previously. I don't understand the pricing of cat convertors in the country. Friends in Oz would buy high performance cats for their modified cars for 60-100 POUNDS each. They were good quality brands, which did the job without incident.

Why not just have aftermarket cats installed? I bet even they are expensive here.

Get out of here!!!!!

Blooming Heck, that would pay for a whole years software upgrade for my navigation system. :(

Is that for your V8 CL?

Regards,
John

You could buy a reasonable condition 190E for that and run it into the ground.

Hi Scotth_uk,
Sounds like it would be cheaper to buy one from 'Down Under' and have it air freighted over here.

I wonder if the smoke would come out of the exhaust clockwise or anti-clockwise? :)

it sounds like a bloomin diesel at the moment.. been getting steadily worse over the last week - i think next week it will sound like a tractor...

I quoted a member recently for a pair of CATS for a V8, think it was a SL, cant be sure, I think the price was roughly, approximately around £250-£300 ish, cant be 100% on that though!

My memory is not what it used to be.

DOH! :p

Read my threads on rattly cats 1600 + vat from a dealer!! so i know where ur coming from guy! go see howard and scott!!

Cut it open, remove the insides & weld back up, cost me nothing :) No rattle.

the pics of the cats from the discount cats site look wrong - unless they are just library pics..

jimmy - please look my car up - CL420 1996... if you can get me one at a 'decent' price i'd appreciate it..

Oiiii!!!! I'll have you know we had a noisey PETROL E-class 200 Kompressor for a couple of days. 'The Boss' commented on how much louder it was compared to our quiet, smooth, slick (not sick), economical, long lasting diesel. :) ;) ;)

(Bloomin' diesel indeed) If ever tractors were fitted with the latest QUIET CDI technology the poor wildlife will be decimated when all the insects, mice etc get run over when they fail to hear the 'purrr' of the economical mean, diesel thrashing machines. :)

Me touchy?

Noisey diesel indeed :D
Kind regards,
John

Sorry for brief thread hijack.

I'll conceed a modern turbo diesel is torqey, powerfull and will give many a petrol engined car a run for it's money. However, you CDI driveers must be a different breed if you don't think they are still noisy.

Everytime I hear one start up next to me at the petrol station or similar I chuckle.

From the outside, at idle, they are noisy. They are!

Back on topic, Iwill be interested in what you do Guy, I think mine is on the way, but I am trying not to hear it.
