I have CCTV with 1 camera. It has failed to record images. The supplier/installer came and looked at the recorder and said the hard drive had gone. A friend tried the recorder on a PC and you could hear it turning. Would this suggest the hard drive is ok and that the problem is something else?

just because the HD can be heard to rotate does not mean anything, they are cheap enough so just pop a replacement HD in and get recording

Make sure you replace with a HD designed for CCTV. These normally have uprated bearings and inernals as designed to be running 24/7. Dont use a standard desktop HDD.

Is it a simple matter to replace the hard drive? Can I just unplug old HD and install new HD or is there more to it than that?

Indeed.

One would have to plug the disk in to a PC directly or via an enclosure and format it to see if it is working OK - then test it.

Not really worth it as said.

You can always take the replacement hard disk out and sell it later should it prove not to be that...
