Hi I have a 2002 CD220 CDI, a couple of weeks ago the car had been standing for a couple of weeks, and on starting it ran for about 10 seconds then stopped. It then struggled to start but did after many attempts, ran after that ok for a few days and the same happened again.
Once starting seems fine, and has only happened 4 times now but would like to get to the bottom of it. Have done over 1000 miles since it first happened so I have ruled bad fuel. any ideas out there, would be most gratefull. Martin:dk:

Hi ya, with those symptoms my first guess would be an air leak on the fuel system somewhere. When you do this next get someone else to turn the key while you check the fuel lines for air bubbles, i bet there are loads

Another possibility is the crankshaft speed sensor. These can play up allowing you to restart and then stop again.

Hi, i thought they tended to give problems once the car was warm and not with cold starting ?

Who can say, it should be easy to diagnose once you get it on a STAR system though.

The symptoms fit perfectly with air into the fuel via perished pipe o rings

+1^^, and I don't think that you can see the bubbles in the pipes on this model ..... may be wrong though.

I think it should be made law that all diesel cars should have a clear piece of fuel pipe by the filter, would save one hell of a lot of head :wallbash: :thumb:

You can see air bubbles on this engine.

You either have an air leak or an injector is leaking off.

Thanks guys, thank you for all your comments, much appreciated. I will investigate air in fuel, I presume that air can get in but fuel can not leak out as the density etc.
