Hi all. I'm hoping the title will get you interested.
I'm thinking of buying a non-runner CDI270 '02 as a replacement for my wheezy old C220 estate. The current owner came to the car one morning and discovered the fuel filler cap had been forced open. Assuming it was an attempted diesel theft, they secured the cap and drove the car. It came to a stop.
They've replaced the fuel pump under the bonnet, and the filter, and it still wouldn't start, so off it went to our terrible main dealer (I live in Ibiza and there's only one MB dealer here.)
They have discovered a crystallised substance in the tank, told the owner it might be some sort of acid and quoted thousands to fix it... So the car is for sale.
I haven't viewed it yet but would I be right in thinking that, as a common-rail injection, it will have an electric lift pump in the tank in addition to the high-pressure pump under the bonnet - and that this might be the first victim say, if someone were to have put sugar (surely a likely crystalline suspect) in the tank?
Thanks for any ideas. Just would be a shame to see the car crushed!
