Mercedes blue efficiency 220E CDI Estate
Good morning.....

I need to change the tyre's on my Mercedes 2010 220e estate.....

Current she has 225-55-16 tyres....

I have a set of new & nearly new 205-55-16 tyres that I want to fit on her.....

Is there any safety or legal reasons to stop me from doing this please?

Thanks from John....

Are the load and speed ratings the same?

Sorry, I assume that is on the tyres?....

I need to check this out.....

IF the ratings are the same can I assume I am green for GO here??

John.
Do you understand what the tyre figures mean?

The current tyres are 225 mm wide the 55 refers to the sidewall height expresses as a percentage of the width.

The tyres you are proposing to fit will therefore have a different rolling radius and will give an approximate speedometer error of around 3%.

More importantly is the 205/55/16 a tyre size that Mercedes list as suitable? If not then you could be potentially at risk of your insurance company not covering you in the event of an accident.

Tyres suitable for your car are on the fuel flap.

Why would you want to "under tyre" your car , if it is to save some money then it may cost you more in the long run should you have a claim - fault or not.

Re "rolling radius" - it's the same as the existing tyres, 16 x 55 - it is the width of the tyre that is changing, therefore (I'm no expert) in my view the
speedo won't be affected.

As he intends to possibly change from non-standard tyres, I'd certainly tell the insurance company

On the car i have/GLE and other cars from memory inc our daughter Audi/TT, the info on the fuel flap or frame of the car in my view refers to the
tyre options the car may have come with and not the other possibilities. I may be wrong but that is my take on it.

No it is not the same

The 55 figure is the sidewall height expressed as a percentage of tyre width.

55%of 225 is different to 55% of 205 👍

If you change tyre width and keep the side wall heigh at 55% then sidewall height changes and so does the rolling radius.

What it came with and suitable from the fuel flap are one of the same , in the eyes of an insurer anyways. 😏

The smaller tyres have a lesser rolling diameter 3.1% of the OEM fitment , 2052mm V 1984mm.

Minimal under reading of speed but probably no worse than running with a reduced air pressure in the bigger tyres.

If MB thought that 205`s were safe and adequate for that vehicle then it would have had 205`s from factory.

I guess you could argue it was "standard fitment, " but the insurer could say, "we asked if was it standard fitment when the car when new."
Years ago on my Audi 2.3E I removed the badges and I told the insurance and they noted it. When I bought my fist ne, brand new car
a black modea v6 Ghia, I had the showroom that delivered the car fit an ST grill. I told the insurance at that time as well.

My MO re car insurance, if in any doubt, tell the car insurance company and that has worked for me..

"I'm no expert" is the only correct words in your post!
