Changing airbag control module in 210

Hello,

I am hoping that somebody can shed some light on this. I need to replace a defective airbag control module in my 210. I have a part number from Mercedes which is A0048200826, their price for a new one is £310. They are available on ebay, if I match the part number will it fit without coding to the car? Does it also have to come from the exact same model, year etc? I am guessing that 210s will be all the same from the airbag point of view, but maybe earlier models would have fewer of them? I have read lots of threads around this subject, but so far I haven't found an definite answer to this.

Thanks in advance.

I'm not certain, but if the part umber matches, you might be OK on a 210, I know later models store the VIN in there. one way to findout would be to bite the bullet and fit one, worst case you need to pay someone to code it, if the part is nearly £300 cheaper that wouldnt seem so bad

Thanks cheddar, in the absence of a certain answer I guess you're right. I'll source one with the right part number and see how it goes.

I've a spare one from a V reg 320cdi I broke up, I'll check the part number an let you know.
If it's the correct one, make me an offer?

Edit** mine's 001 820 22 26, like this one:
Mercedes-Benz W220 S500 S55 SRS airbag sensor 001 820 22 26 | eBay

The warning label on mine says it needs coding to the specific vehicle.

Pretty sure airbags have their own separate circuit so it may be a plug and play although you may need to reset the airbag warning light

Thanks both. Can anyone tell me if there are several part numbers which would fit or does it need to be an exact match? There are no perfect matches on ebay or at dronsfields, but a google search produces several US and Russian sites which list several part numbers as if they might be interchangeable.

Part number do change over time. Your local Stealer may be able to advise if you give them the part numbers you've seen as they may have been superseded.

Thanks for that. The part number which I have so far is one which I obtained from Mercedes, quoting my vin number. I haven't removed the module yet as the car is in use by my wife most of the time, so I need to choose my moment and I would like to have a replacement to hand when I do so.

It would be great if I could find out whether one of the modules on ebay with a different part number would work correctly.

Post or PM your VIN/REG and I or another member can have a look for you.

EDIT: It does seem on a preliminary check that the number you have is the latest. The 3 numbers listed are

A0018202326 replaced by
A0038203426 replaced by
A0048200826

This was based on a E320 CDI

Thanks for all the help so far.

When I wrote the original post I was trying to keep things simple, based on information which I had been given, ie that the module was faulty. My search for the right part has resulted in reading various articles and websites which are now causing me to question this, so perhaps if I explain the problem from the beginning it will help.

About two years ago my wife (at very low speed) dropped the nearside front wheel of the car into a drain with a high kerb, resulting in the car coming to an abrupt halt and the drivers side pretensioner firing. I bought a second hand replacement seat belt which was fitted and my mechanic was able to clear the srs light.

In January, again at very low speed, I grounded the underside of the car on a badly rutted track. This again resulted in the same pretensioner firing. This time a replacement seat belt was fitted but the light could not be cleared, and diagnostics shows B1000, defective control module. This is generic diagnostics not star.

Is it possible that I could remove the module and send it off to get it repaired/reset?

Have I been barking up the wrong tree assuming that the word defective meant that a new one was required?

My usual mechanic (and one other) expressed the view that the pretensioner should not have fired in the circumstances I described. Reading the websites of companies who offer the repair service, it sounds like the system might report an error with the module, but this could simply mean that the module is storing crash data.

I'd be grateful for any thoughts/ideas on this.

If an airbag or tensioner fires, can the control unit not be reset or does it require replacement?

That is indeed the question, does DTC B1000 mean the module is faulty and needs replacing, or simply that it needs to be reset?

You are probably heading towards the need of an Indi or Mercedes workshop now I think to answer those questions, certainly beyond me anyway!

Yes you may be right, the problem is that good independents are thin on the ground here in west Wales. There are so many modules on ebay but finding one with the right part number is proving difficult.

An airbag specialist has just told me that it is common for the module to develop a fault after any srs components have been activated. This can be caused by power surges during activation.

Another specialist has confirmed that B1000 indicates an internal fault with the module.

I'll persevere with it and update with the outcome.

If it has been erased but comes back then it remains faulty. Doesn't matter if you use a STAR machine or Snap On etc.

Keep your eyes peeled on ebay. @a111r and another member on t'other side is breaking a W210, might get lucky

Cheers Bob, yes plenty of cheap / free 210 parts still available!
Is my module, '99 so an early one, worth a punt, given the data above?
£20 posted.
