I was wondering how much work and cost is involved in changing the standard Audio 10 in my W203 to a MB sat nav.

Also is the MB sat nav worth having or are there some aftermarket units that will fit, look good and be unobtrusive and vitally still work with the steering wheel controls?

Ideally I would also like to integrate a 'phone and use the built in controls but I imagine this is going to be costly and complex if I look at the MB route.

Thank you for this. You say in your posts that you were dissapointed with the Comand 2.0 retrofit. What specifically was the areas that dissapointed you?

Am I correct in thinking that the map CD stays in the drive so you cannot have sat nav and music CD together on the Comand 2?

That isnt my site, just a link to a guide on how to do it.

Might be worth a call to commanduk - I believe Alfie and his merry men specialise in this sort of thing. I think Alfie is on this forum so maybe he'll pop up!

Comand 2 works well but its very basic compared to say a Garmin or TomTom. No postcode entry. Need a CD changer if you want navigation and music from cd at the same time. Need new CD Rom for each country. On the plus side its very accurate and you can code it via star to give directions in the instrument cluster. Music sound quality is first rate - better than audio 10.

Think long and hard, I went down this route with my old CLK. Bought a Comand 2, phone module, ipod interface(dension) and it looked great but I could have spent alot less with and had better functionallity.

Thought about fitting a comand to my E Class but just couldn't justify around £1000 to do it and bought a TomTom instead for £130.

Another thing to bear in mind is the cost of updating the maps, these can be cheap copies/out of date maps from ebay or around £100 from Comand online or other stores.

It's really up to you and how much cash have you got.

So I am looking at £500 plus some cables plus a CD changer plus fitting for a unit that although matching the car will have poor functionality compared to modern systems.

The sensible alternative seems to be an aftermarket unit combining mp3, bluetooth 'phone, sat nav etc integrated into the car to be able to use the steering wheel controls, auto mute the radio/CD/ mp3 etc when making or receiving calls.

Any suggestions along this front and any recommendations for suppliers / fitting in Wiltshire / Hampshire (Salisbury /Southampton preferred)

Have you thought about Dynavin?

Dynavin

I had never heard of them but many thanks, a very neat looking solution.

Dynavin

Would be nice if someone bought one of these and would report how it performs and eventually if it lives long enough.

So far I've only seen one person who had bought the device. He was selling it, claimed he run out of money (before he managed to install it). Was selling it at half the price. Perhaps it is still available. I just go suspicious if the real reason for selling it was a sudden shortage of money.

Here is another option:

IIRC two members on the other side have a Dynavin in their Mercedes. Also they are popular on american forums especially BMW ones so plenty of info if you search.

Alfie made this post recently about them: http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/interior/109424-any-one-has-dynavin-comand-w203-pre-facelift.html

Op has a pre-facelift W203 so no good.

The link for the other product was for an E-class, this manufacturer did not seem to have anything for the C-class, facelift or pre-facelift. The link was supposed to be a generic reference to another after market product if forum members had any experience about that, sorry about the confusion in relation to the W203 model.

And thanks for the link to the other thread where Alfie reported about his experience, very useful (had missed that earlier). I would not consider these myself but this is a good reference for other forum members.
