Just looking for some ideas, I've owned my W219 CLS 3 years in August, ( longest I've owned any car) It is pretty much immaculate imo, few age related external marks but the interior is box fresh.. Full main mercedes dealer history. One previous owner, garaged, Covered just 800 miles in the last 18 months as I just don't use it. A full ad to follow.

I've just got a itch for a 4 wheel drive, I've ruled out BMW, Mercedes and Audi their offering in the 4 wheel drive dept just doesn't float my boat.

I'm looking at spending.. well up to £18-£20,000.00, no finance. Including the sale of my car as it's so well specced and clean I wouldn't want to part ex it. So a private sale will be on the cards an ad will appear within the next few days, although I don't need to sell it to buy.

Anyone had any experiences with other prestige marques 4×4? Petrol not a fan of oil burners.

Any input, I've been looking at Porsche Cayenne but I would imagine parts would make mercedes look cheap!

That leads me on to Land Rover, a Sport so it's going to be the Supercharged petrol model or the big daddy Vogue again Petrol.

Thanks in advance for anyone's experiences or wish they hadn't!

Regards

Michael

Once you've had a proper 4x4 you won't want to be without again. The Porsche at that price point can have issues and you are pretty much guaranteed to have issues with a LR product. Not many petrol GLs around.

Hurrah to your choice of Petrol over Diesel (I love a good V8 mesself) - I would recommend LPG converting it though, I have converted several and with a conversion, the only difference you'll notice is in the wallet!

I too would suggest ML63 or GL63 (that's an absurd car - I love it!) - I think the quality of LR products is better than it was, however I am not sure it's quite up with the best yet....

I believe the saying goes "If you want to go into the outback, take a Land Rover. If you want to come out again, take a Toyota".

Or something like that.

That's true. The issues on Rangies are well known and we had a few of them. I once had an L322 RR 5.0 S/C and that had way to much engine for the chassis. But for feel good factor LR products really do rule the roost.

Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 if you can live with the fuel bill , you won't stop smiling

I am on my second Cayenne now, the first was a 3.2L Petrol (955 model) and my current one is a 3.0L Diesel (957 model).

The 957 also known as the Gen II was introduced in 2007 and is a vast improvement over the 955, as the electrical gremlins have been sorted.

The best cars are the 2009 and 2010 models as they have the update PCM unit with touch screen Sat Nav and in built Bluetooth.

Spec levels on the Cayenne vary hugely, as most features are not standard. The ones to go for are Xenons, Bose, Air Suspension, Extended Leather and the Body styling.

As a very low mileage user, the pick of the bunch are the Turbo variants and generally come with higher spec levels.

Running costs are not as bad as you would imagine, brakes and tyres are not the cheapest, but again as a low mileage user they don't need changing often. I have a specialist that looks after my non service issues. Servicing is done at the main dealers as I want to renew the warranty.

The think I love best about the Cayenne is the way that it drives, they handle well and feel quite car like, even when being pushed.

Have I got this right?

You are selling a car you don't use, so you can buy another one you will not use?

Makes no sense to me.

Haha, ironically it's sounds crazy but with kids and newborn they would absolutely muller the Interior ( cashmere ).

So most family outing are in the better half's s203 c200k, the wife has no interest In cars or keeping them clean but is giving me a grief for having a garage ornament.

So my real reason for change I suppose talking myself into letting the CLS go is ill buy something that can accommodate us all and I'd go for a dark Interior with a sunroof of course and use it as it won't fit in the garage lol

I've owned a few 4x4's slap bang in your price range: LR Discovery 3 TDV6 HSE, a RR Sport TDV6 and two RR Sport TDV8's, a W164 ML 420 CDi and an Audi Q7 4.2 TDi.

Pick of the bunch were the RR Sports; they never put a foot wrong in circa 30k miles of driving, the interiors feel as though it's been designed with real people in mind, at ease either on the motorway or a field. The German efforts felt more like estates injected with steroids ie the original price tag not necessarily matching the quality.

On the subject of children, you can fit two child seats and still have room in the middle for an adult, something that I struggled to find in many cars. I also have two child seats in my S-class and there is more room across the bench of the Cayenne.

That said, the GTS has heavily sculptured rear seats so the middle space is reduced.

Maybe lack of sleep on my behalf has vacated my humour.

Anyhow back on topic, I'm sticking with MB and dropping the 4x4 (16) idea, I'll just drive my current car more!!

I think my real issue was it being a 06 reg and getting on but it's such a fantastic looking car imo colour spec and it's cost me nothing bar a aux battery and service, I just can't bring myself to let it go so I'm going to enjoy it instead.

I appreciate you said you have ruled out bmw but I went from a Mercedes C250 W204 to an X6 after saying I would never own a bmw.
The performance, fuel economy, handling and gearbox are superb (if you can live with it's looks!).
I was contemplating a RR Sport but found the X6 to be more 'sporty' and contemporary. May be tempted with a mercedes gle coupe next though.
