Hi all, i am going to have a go at changing the electrical plate in my 1997 e230 5 speed auto, could someone please tel me, when i go to drop the valve body, is it all in 1 complete unit? I.e are there any bits that are likely to fall out of it when removing or is it quite straight forward? The problem i am having is that my car wont change up gears i.e limp home mode, also has anyone ever had this problem, and it turned out to be the electrical plug to the box not getting a signal causing the problem? This is all new to me as its my 1st merc, and any help or tips or pointers would be of great help. Cheers guy....

If you're a MBOC member you can download the articles as pdfs - failing that copies are sometimes on eBay or a friendly member could lend you a copy?

How do you become a MBOC member and do you get lots of good benefits from being a member ? plus how much does it cost ? :o

Here..... The Mercedes-Benz Club

I think it may be £35 per annum....Its the only officially recognised club in the UK.

Worth joining....great mag, good technical info, good days out, good discounts on Parts / labour.

If you are doing this job or getting it done make sure that you also change the electrical connector to the gearbox. They can leak and the fluid can travel into the ECU and wreck it causing a very expensive problem.

You really need to get it diagnosed first otherwise you might be replacing it for nothing.

i have had it put on a star machine, and thats telling me its the plate.

The plate and connector are all one piece.

no the "pilot bushing" is seperate.. this fits from the outside of the box and has the seals on it... its £9 from the dealer and worth replacing.

what i really want to know is, when i drop the valve body will it all come down as 1 piece or is it likely to have bits droping out from it, cheers

This isn't the reason the leaks occurred - it was a design fault in the electro-hydraulic plate.

I had my plate replaced by MB when it went and the pilot bushing (thats what I meant to say rather than "connector") was also replaced as a precaution....It is also on WIS that it must be done when the plate is replaced.
