Going changing the front discs on the coupé at the weekend. Was just wandering if its an easy job or will it need to go to a dealer? Changed many a disc on VAG cars but never on a merc.

Thanks, Matt

Easy job, make sure you do the pads at the same time..

Doddle did mine a while back and got wifes w203 to do they are the same as any other sliding caliper car.

Can you re-use the pad wear monitor as long as the pads are not worn down enough to trigger a warning? Or does that need to be changed every time you renew the pads too?

Russ

Not yet changed the pads on my W203 but the wear indicator on other cars is built into the pad with the wires just inserted into the plug. No doubt if i'm wrong someone will advise.

New discs often come covered with protective grease, so don't forget to clean it off before fitting them....white spirit should do the job fine I recall.

Also, you'll need some copper grease to put on the back of the pads that contact the callipers.

Not built into the pads, it is separate on mine.

if they are undamaged there should be no reason why not , there just a piece of molded plastic with a wire one end and a metal pin the other (covered in plastic) that clips to the pads and when the pads wear down enough the pin thouchs the disc and makes the circuit up to eluminate the light on the dash, before they start grinding

Cool. Thanks. I'm getting into the car maintenance lark. Did the front shocks on my Megane last week. Brakes on the Merc this week.

I reckon if I keep records and quotes I should have saved enough in the next 12 months or so to dump the Megane and get a second Merc.

At least that's the business case I'll present to SWMBO.

Doing mine tomorrow and had the same question. No warning lights yet so can I just reuse the old one?

That's what I did, biggest problem was removing the old sensor without breaking it, it was stuck fast to the old pad.

but they are only a couple of quid aren't they? If you've saved the money on the labour then why skimp on the parts?

That's exactly what I did. So, for future reference it might be a good idea to have one on standby. No motor factors open on a Sunday.

Other than that it was extremly simple.

Discs are pretty easy to change.
If the pads are below, say, a 1/4" I'd replace them while you're there, otherwise there's no need.
