It is necessary. You've gone 5 years without a transmission service. My 17 reg B Class 220d has done 23,500 miles. Mercedes recommend changing the transmission fluid and filter. This is costly, does it REALLY need to be done?
Mercedes quoted £680 for the “A”service plus changing the fluid and filter. I had previously been quoted, again by Mercedes, less than £300 for this service.Hello and welcome . Yours must be the '5 years or specific mileage' group . So it looks like you hit the time limit before the mileage limit.
Personally I would get it done , it's cheap compared to a new gearbox or getting 'issues' (breakdowns) in the middle of nowhere.
Treat it a bit like a cambelt or brake fluid , where the age is just as big a factor as the mileage.
It can be carried out by any decent MB independent or even a local transmission specialist. You say it's 'costly' ..what have you been quoted for the work and by whom ?

I recently had a gearbox service done on our B180 for £235.14 by the Mercedes independent at Ibrox. That was at 75K miles and eight years. The main dealer originally quoted you >£300 for an A service AND a gearbox service , somethings not right there.
£680 seems a bit more realistic , especially for a MD.
Have you had any quotes for the work from an Indy ?

I simply can't afford this so intend using an independent. They suggested the extra work wasn't necessary at such a low mileage. In the light of comments here though I shall have it done.
The < £300 was quoted when I asked last year how much the next service would cost - no mention of transmission service. My partner had just died and she always dealt with servicing etc. as the car was in her name and she was retired so had plenty of free time. She'd taken out a service plan and I'd wondered if it was worth continuing (I cancelled it as I'd have spent over £500 for one “free” minor service. The £680 was a shock! The main dealer originally quoted you >£300 for an A service AND a gearbox service , somethings not right there.

I contacted an independent garage regarding the ordinary service and he advised that it wasn't necessary to change the transmission fluid and filter at 23,500 miles. Obviously, now I'm having second thoughts! I don't know of any independent Mercedes specialists locally and, because of ill health, I'm reluctant to arrange anything very far away (the local garage I mentioned is literally five minutes walk away).
No problem, thanks for your helpApologies , the way i took it was the £300 was quoted for the minor + GB fluid change.

Thanks. I'll definitely have it done.Well sorry to hear of your loss,to be honest the gearbox service is more important that the engine service,at 23 grand your engine has proberly been over serviced but the ATF in the gearbox needs changing on the period of time something like 5 years and a belated welcome aboard our forum.
Cheers. That's the right decision. Might cost some money now, but will save a lot later. And make sure that you get all of the fluid changed.....trans, TC and cooler. You will get some quotes that are much cheaper than others, but that can mean that only the trans is changed.
Fair comments , I wondered about mine tbh , only 20k on the clock. Reading into it leads me to believe temperature changes cause condensation to build up inside the gearbox ,so effectively introducing water into the oil. Could be much about nothing ,but I'm sure mb will of done some development to recommend a change after 5 years regardless of mileage.I personally wouldn't bother for another couple of years, 23,500 miles is nothing for these gearboxes, I can't see how your transmission fluid can degrade on a time basis, I imagine a lot of people will never change the fluid at even twice that mileage.
