Do gearboxes suck in damp air then ?
Not really to the point the gear oil will convert in to water. Some of you are over exaggerating this matter. On our older German import with a ZF transmission, I had neglected to change the ZF oil for 10 years, and I sold it as is. In those 10 years, I didn't have any gear slips or explosions. But yes when I did the final complete service at MB prior to the sale, it was dusky and had a malignant odour. 2 techs working on the car were surprised as to how the valves, conductor plates and Torque Converter was not damaged. MB filter had gunk like fungus on it. My friend, is still driving this old ML with better care.

Found it !!

Water ending up in the labyrinth of the gearbox through the bog standard breather because of some sort of windscreen scuttle problem.
