116 auto Dueliner
Hi, i have just ordered a vito 116 dueliner (facelift model) but couldn't order the 17inch alloys as a factory option. The dealer says its because of a type approval problem. You can have them on the van & traveliner but not the dueliner. They have given me a price to fit them as a dealer fit option (£1200+vat). Does any one know what his would do on insurance if the vehicle hasn't got type approval for them? Dealer tells me that Mercedes has put in for type approval but it hasn't been granted yet.

TBH I doubt anyone would cover you if you fitted wheels that were not approved for the vehicle.

Many van insurers are funny about ANY modification from factory stock. CIS (Co Op) have said they will not insure my Dualiner if I change the wheels from the factory 17" alloys it came with to anything else (even M-B ones, fully approved).

no that issue is incorrect to a point.
the problem being if you order a dualiner with said alloys Mercedes will class it it as a car so higher tax braket.we have had to two of our sales motors this way due this.
If you want them tell asap as we have had supply issues.

I will say that we a 122CDI come through for van sales manager with the xeons with LED running lights it looked Sweet

My Dualiner 120 on factory 17" alloys is registered & taxed as 'light goods vehicle' (tax Class 39). The body style is 'van/side windows'.

a salesman informs this is the issue with the facelifted Vito

Interesting, wonder why it's treated differently?

I think there are issues with load ratings on certain alloy wheels making them unsuitable for use with certain vans ?

How would you be placed with your insurer if you wanted to fit steel wheels with winter tyres during adverse weather conditions such as we are experiencing now ? Arguably , the vehicle would be much safer with them .

not sure need to speak with the insureer

i was doing a bit of digging on Mercs info site us dealers have acessto its seem to be a issue with load rating and GVW of the dualliner which is odd but it seems Mecedes are working on the issure

I had this problem when i ordered mine, I spoke to my contact at MB UK just to make sure that the dealer was "spinning me a yarn" and its true, apparently the tweaks Mercedes have made on the facelift to the chassis and suspension, means they have to get type approval again on the 17" wheels .... they hope to solve it in the next 6 months

I'm involved in type approval as we manufacture vehicle seats, we always test "worse case scenario" so no doubt Mercedes tested with the 17" alloys on the new chassis and may have had some stability issues and played safe with the 16" ... whilst type approval does not really take that long (i think Mercedes have a TÜV Rheinland inspector permenently based at their factory) i think the issue is a little more challenging

I would not put the 17" alloys on, the guys at the factory would not just do it to be awkward and shame on the dealer offering you aftermarket alloys (albeit Mercedes wheels)
