Hello people, today I have been offered a cheap Lotus Elise it is a 1997 P reg, silver, 1.8L 110bhp?? my Manager bought it as a wright off a couple of years ago, it has covered very low miles but is now on a Q plate.

Its had new clams etc. and all the work has been done at garages etc. New MOT and has the VIC cert. He just wants it out the way now I think the project cost him about £7k in total although he doesn't like to admit it...:D

He has said I can have it for £5k so my question is it going to be worth buying to sell on for a quick profit?? Does the Q make it a worthless kit car...

Or if someone wants a cheap Lotus Elise let me know...:)

I wouldn't take the risk for the chance of a slim potential profit.

Not one I would buy at that price, Elise are turning up at 7K now with full history and no issues, I would expect it around 40% cheaper due to Q plate history so 4.2k tops, or 3.5k to then sell on with a profit

I'd leave well alone - as has been said it's nowhere near cheap enough. Although I think we are generally overly cautious about accident repairs the market doesn't like them, Elise's are notoriously difficult to get right and are becoming increasingly common within that price bracket anyway.

(and it's Silver - yuch ;))

Way overpriced. The Q-plate probably means it was stolen and the chassis number removed.
This is what you can get for around £7K.

Edit.
and has the VIC cert
So it was a Cat C? Run Ady, RUN!

Thanks guys for making me see sense...:D You have confirmed what I was thinking and I thought It was a little overpriced.

Janner - I am not sure I actually think it was worse  Cat C doesn't have to have a Q-plate does it??

Lotus - I had £3500 in my head I think I heard somwhere that a Q is usally half of that cars actual value before it was damaged...

Cat C means it was badly damged. Q-plate normally means the chassis number and number plates were missing hence has to be re-registered.
I fancied the one I listed above. Cat D damaged but the only damage looks to be the driver's sill and a tiny bit on the rear wing.
Early Elises are now cheap so why buy a crap one?

Hi Janner,
I take it you mean the numbers have actually been cut away?

I would agree with everyone else; either walk, or run away.

Nowadays most parts are date stamped, but if the chassis numbers have been cut out, then they are gone. I think I once saw a documentary where some villians had ground away the engine number, but it was recovered by forensic examination.

Don't do it.
Regards,
John
