1966 Mercedes 230SL Pagoda - PistonHeads

The current vendor detailed his acquisition of this car on a thread in the Readers Cars section of Pistonheads.

It's worth a read if anyone's interested in the car & probably clarifies the asking price.

Hopefully the link above will take you there.

Thanks. Just read the entire thread. An epic purchase and a truly epic car. I want!

Looks nice but you can see that its a "driver" quality car and needs some money spending.

As has been said, although parts are available for these from both MB and aftermarket suppliers, costs soon start to rack up trying to make an OK car into a nice example...

Lots of these in the USA and so they are much much cheaper.

what about w111 280 se 3.5 or 1954 gullwing then they are the real gems

Just driven off with it's new owner this morning. It was a nice car and I loved owning it.

I still have my r129 that I will keep forever, and recently bought a G500 so I still have a couple of nice Mercs.

my dad had one of these in the 60`s 280sl right up until it sold for a mere £4000 back in the late 80`s

bad decision now i think :wallbash:

was full of rust even then you could push your finger through the arches

I had it advertised at £30k for over a month. Streams of nonsense enquiries some of which would have been amusing had it not been a total waste of time.
Some I can remember;
Is it lhd? I can't tell from the photos.
After coming and asking a million questions and me taking him out, guy says he'll bring a mechanic to inspect the next day. Never heard from again.
30+ offers of 70% of the asking and below (mostly in the high teens low 20s) - who bothers to do this?
One guy who said he was going to spend "60k on it" then was stubborn about £500 on the asking so I said forget it.
At least 6 folk "I would like to come see it- I'll call you back" never to be heard
From again.

I thought selling a specialist classic car would be easy as people would know what they were looking at. This was a bit of a nightmare in terms of the people I had calling me. Sold for just under asking in the end to a nice guy so all was well.

The fact that he hasn't had it MOTd and registered should give you a clue as to the condition of it underneath. It's also not a good colour hence why it hasn't sold for months. Started off at 26 from memory.

Agreed. Selling cars is a nightmare. So much so that I've taken some serious hits by selling &/or p/x'ing to dealers.
