Today I called up the local autobox specialist to enquire about getting the ATF changed. They said it would cost about 90 quid all in, and its probably not necessary, and then explained I should check the level with the engine hot and running, and make sure it has the right amount in before I go spending money on it.

So on checking the oil, it has a good solid line of oil up to about half way between the marks, and then a more splattery smeary oiling up to just above the top level. Which one of these is the correct mark to look at?
I'm checking it by taking the dipstick out and wiping it, then plunging it back in all the way and quickly whipping it out.

Its on a 190E 2.6 auto.

Make sure you have run the car through all the gears before checking. The lower line is for cold gearbox and the upper for hot gearbox.

This is after my run home from work, so it will have run through all the gears and got nicely warm. Is there a pump in there making it exciting, or does the fluid sit fairly still to have its level taken? I want to work out if the bitty bit is the level or just spattering.

Look at the solid line of fluid.
