I am looking to buy a cherished number from someone, where the number is held on a retention certificate.

DVLA will not release any information, understandably I guess. They have said that the current owner can request a duplicate certificate once I walk away, thereby making the one I have in my hand nul and void.

Seems a bit risky to me.

Does anyone have any experience on how to guarantee the right to that number once the cash changes hands? i.e. is the certificate genuine - how can you tell?

Thanks

Marc

Contact the Sales Manager from Registartion Transfers (I have dealt with them before and they were helpful... www.regtransfer.co.uk - telephone number is on website...

There is a certain amount of trust here. I suppose it's down to who you are buying it from and how much you are paying, no different to when you buy a car privately really, if you don't like the look/sound of them you walk away.

They need to sign the document under the 'Add/Change of Nominee' section, if they sign this, take your money and then apply for a new certificate I would imagine there would be a case for fraud.

Local DVLA sorted this out for me..............

For information:

The seller has to appoint a nominee (being me) on part 1 of the Certificate, and has to send the certificate to the DVLA with a cheque for £25. The DVLA then return the certificate to him with me listed as nominee - I can then get seller to sign part 4 of the certificate and give him payment. As I am nominee - can't apparently go back on it.

Bit long winded but safer...........

I agree with OGiii here. The seller will have either a V778 or V750 certificate holding the cherished number and will have to pay £25 to get the nominee details changed to your name. When DVLA send the revised certificate back to the seller with your name as the nominee you will not actually own the number until it goes onto your car (even if you are the nominee). This means that from the time your hand over the cash it is purely on trust. Make sure that the person you are buying from has a good reputation/track record.

I recently sold a number on eBay for over £300 and the buyer had to wait around 3-4 weeks for me to get the details changed and get the certificate sent to him. I'm sure many buyers in a similar position would have been quite nervous during this time in fear of being ripped off. Fortunately he trusted me and was more than happy at the end.

Just noticed you sorted it out. I was a bit slow with my Submit button! Glad you're happy now :)
