Hi,

The auto-box on my W203 'chirps' when changing gears, usually from 2nd to 3rd...

Is this something to worry about? :dk:

Is it possible blackbirds have nested in the box???

Thanks,

Dobbs.

Could be Bats in the Belfry Housing....sorry had to say it.. know nowt about chirps in the Autobox either.

Is it definitely the gearbox or could it be the supercharger?

My supercharger used to chirp when changing gears when it engaged on acceleration.

Disappeared quite some time ago.

I liked it actually so was a shame.

Now that's interesting - I've assumed that it's the gearbox as the birdies chirp on gear changes - I was not aware that the supercharger disengaged and re-engaged on gear changes...

Better check the supercharger for nesting birds

I'd go to a specialist and get it properly diagnosed before you end up with a BIG BILL :D

Hi,

Anyone else experienced chirping and can shed any light on where the birdies might be nesting?

Cheers,

Dobbs.

Does it happen when you drive in the Middle of the Road?

On the old Borg Warner 3 speed auto boxes, a 'chirp' during gear change was commonly caused by the sprag clutch worn/slipping...... I dont know if the MB boxes have a sprag clutch?

Bloomin 'eck, that's going back to when cassettes were just new !!

Hope it works OK for you Dobbsy, or you could try dripping graphite grease down a feeler blade , I did not bother as I thought knowing me I'd out to much on & it'd get a bit messy.

Hey folks - we're getting warmer now :)

In the post above from SLKNick, there's a link to a similar problem along with a couple of video's of the noise - my W203 is making the same noise - replies to the post say:

"That's the cam advance magnet rattling"

and:

"Just to add, I have never seen any ill effects from not having it replaced, it's ever so common and a lot of the cars that are fitted with the later m111 it's probably a false economy cost wise."

Given that a. it's not likely to cause any ill effects and b. would cost around £700 to get it replaced.

Hope this helps others with reports of birds in the transmissions :)

Pannason1C Auto box won't work without one or more spragg bearings, they are actually one way bearings that lock in one direction but allow free movement in the other direction.

Another thought..... Might be the freewheeling pulley on the alternator slipping during gearchanges/sudden engine speed change (sprag clutch again)
