Angie and I fancy a short break late in the year and are toying with taking in one of the Christmas Markets, perhaps (but we're open to suggestions) in Germany?

Does anyone have any experience of any that are particularly worth visiting? We're looking for somewhere with a great atmosphere and are firmly of the "eat, drink, and be merry" persuasion :D

Munich is really a very safe bet. Something for everybody, good markets, good bars and restaurants. If you're looking for something closer (to drive to), Koln is also a good market but not on the same scale as Munich.

Why not supplement a trip to a German German Christmas Market with an English German Christmas Market? :D

During December visit the Birmingham's "Frankfurt Christmas Market" quite a lot with family, friends and even social evenings with colleagues/customers/suppliers - they all love it!! As do I ;)

Nuremberg is the definitive city for German Christmas markets. Very well organised and well promoted. There is an official web site too.

I did Vienna a few years ago......the weather was not particularly conducive as it was dank as opposed to ''deep and crisp and even''. Some of the market was good but most of it was commercialised tat aimed at the tourist market. I will not bother again.

The further South the more traditional so Munich area is a good base, you also might want to consider Dusseldorf seeing as the race of champions is on there 3rd and 4th December so guess which German Christmas market we are going to this year :D

Still - despite the tat (and I have to agree there is a lot about) - think Koln always worth a visit.... the cathedral in the background as you wander round the market is stunning....

And you can always climb the 500 steps up the cathedral to work off some of that food and drink :) Joking apart, its one of the most visited attractions in Germany, well worth seeing.

Copenhagen is always really nice at Christmas, Tivoli Gardens etc

If you're set on Germany, the best Christmas market by a long way imho is Rudesheim. if you google christmas markets, there is a ton of info out there for travel options. It's always worth checking tripadvisor as well.

Bruges is quite nice if you want something nearer. The market isn't that big. I recommend Restaurant de Koetse

Cologne gets my vote too.

The Cathedral is amazing.

My dad told me about his visits in the 1940's - shame he never landed for a good look round.

Stadhuis Square Bruges Is fantastic at Christmas and new year veryfestive and Markt square is great for the market, not massive as 312 sprinter says but well worth the visit :thumb:

I hate to say this, but travelled a fair bit in my younger days working, and the best town / market at Christmas I've ever been to was Cardiff.
