Okay, I know it's rather early to be talking about Christmas, but I saw this Haynes Internal Combustion Engine kit and thought it would make a nice gift for any youngsters (or old timers) who'd like to learn the basics or just enjoy building it.

Once built, this 4-pot model (I believe you can fill it with vegetable oil) shows all the working parts in action and is probably the only engine that will be able to be built indoors without any complaints.

Full instructions are supplied and the model costs around £15-20. The kit is available at such places as Argos, ASDA and Play.com.

I may buy one for Mrs Ringway, and then maybe I can put my spanners away. :)

Depending on Mrs Ringway's disposition to things mechanical, you may find that your spanners are not the only tool for which you no longer have any use...

Looks like good value, though.

I had one for Christmas 2009.
It kept me quiet on boxing day getting it running, though I did have to adjust the firing order.
Also you do not fill them with veg oil, just simply lubricate the pistons with a finger

Ooh, I hadn't thought of that.

I'd have to do something about it. Perhaps call the Radio 4 Viagra phone-in.

..."and coming up at 3.30 will be hardeners question time". :p

I SO need one of those.

The problem with such things is that I proudly display them, and then a couple of days later they 'disappear'

Mrs Ted does not like such fripperies :(

I have the same problem - golf and football trophies, diorama's with tiger tanks/soldiers etc, vintage dinky toys - some in original boxes - all seem to get put in cupboards or loft/garage for no apparent reason.

i built one... was good fun... took me an afternoon!
