Chuffing sound from intake C270

Hi all, have an issue with our old C270, I think I may have diagnosed the fault as a valve issue but wondering if it may be a timing issue. There is what seems to be a misfire and a chuffing sound from within the inlet manifold, this gets much louder when the air pipe is removed from the EGR valve...

Pretty sure not injectors, definitely not injector seals, we have had them done and I know the sound and symptoms
