Hi All

I have a 2011 E250 Diesel which was mainly used on motorways prior to Covid, now that i'm been home working its just been used once a week to go shopping, unfortunately I did not think about the DPF with everything else going on and now I've got the check engine light on.

In a nutshell the engine light came on 3 weeks ago, I suspected it was to do with DPF so went on a long motorway run, the next time I drove the car the light had gone, it drove fine for 2 weeks (no check engine light), all of a sudden yesterdays journey I get the issue again, confusing thing is this journey involved a half an hour motorway trek so do not understand why the light has come on during a long journey.

I called breakdown cover, their computer didnt have the code in the database but I've taken pictures, it looks like it was showing 2 codes, both P2463:

Any ideas what to do next, can these codes clear by themselves? I'm thinking maybe I should get some premium fuel and go on a long motorway drive..

Advice appreciated :)

Just a quick post - I don't know the reasons for the code, however DPF issues are usually due to something else causing the issue - especially since the car is mainly used for motorway use, there should be no issues with the DPF! Often the car won't do a DPF region while there are errors in the computer, so it could be that too.

So even if you clear out the DPF, it's important to find out the real source of the problem. I'm sure a google/someone will be along with what those codes mean soon!

I suggest that you do one or more of the following:

1. Buy an iCarsoft MB v2 with DPF regen function. It will also tell you if the fault is that the DPF is full or perhaps there's another issue (e.g. failed sensor etc).

2. Use only premium fuels (e.g. Shell V-Power) until the car goes back to motorway driving.

3. Consider use of DPF cleaner fuel additive (may not make much difference though).

4. Consider getting a local specialist to remove the DPF and give it a good wash. They will also scan the car with STAR and will be able to carry-out proper diagnosis and confirm the fault.

5. Drive the car more often on motorways.

6. Sell the E250 CDI and buy a petrol-engined car instead.

7. Do not be tempted to remove the DPF or have its internals gutted (as no doubt some members on here will advise you to do).

Thank you, that was going to be my next question, which fuels do members here think are decent, sounds like Shell V-Power may be the one to go for :)

I was tempted to get the iCarsoft but within the next couple of months I want to test drive the Lexus IS300H and maybe go for that, are there any recommended budget scanners that work on all cars? from my limited understanding the cheap OBD2 scanners can scan and reset the basic codes but the more expensive units cover a lot more modules, ideally do not want to spend more then £50..
