A mate has a CL500, about 5/6 years old and it's been in the workshop for the last week with an interesting problem...

Park up in the evening, everything fine and dandy. Next morning, car won't open except with the key - faff about with that and the alarm, etc. Get that sorted, key in, fire up, no problem - except that nothing else electrical works! COMAND, indicators, boot release, etc all dead.

It gets better - turn off the car and remove key. Car continues to run for 2/3 minutes before stopping. Restart car and everything is normal and is fine for the end of the day.

He's pulling his hair out - he's just had a 4K service on his, 4 new tyres, plus £1300 on the wife's CLK.

Thought I'd ask on here and see if there were any bright ideas....

methinks ignition switch is faulty.

Well done Ollie - bang on again.

Car had been in the dealer for 2 days when he strolled in and said "Have you checked the ignition switch?".

He also didn't pay for the 2 days unsuccessful diagnostics - especially when he showed the response given inside 20 mins on this forum!

Thanks again - you're a star!

Nice result :)

Funnily enough I thought the same same thing and it does surprise me that a dealer cant come up with a similar thought given 2 days to work it out

You will be hard pushed asking the average MB techie how a light bulb works,,its not their fault as most of them never wanted to be an electrica. (Swedish) but have just got pushed into it.

Electronics is something that one needs a flare for,, nothing moves, in fact you can see nothing.
