CL55 Instrument Cluster

The instrument cluster on my 2000 CL55 has failed. First the backlighting went but the instruments still worked then soon after the instruments failed when the relevant 5amp fuse blew.

I replaced the fuse the instruments worked and the backlighting occassionally flickered.

Took the car into the local dealer who advised me I needed to replace the whole instrument cluster @ £850 plus labour. Following the vist to the dealer the fuse blew again.

Does anyone know of someone who can repair the cluster or at least give me a second opinion I feel the MB dealer immediately jumped to the 'lets replace the whole unit' option.

Re Instrument cluster failure

I experienced a similar problem on a C200 / W203.

Research showed that the instrument cluster part number has changed frequently over the last few years. This suggests to me that the electronic cluster on the C Class is known to be troublesome. Because the units are so complex repair is not feasible and replacement is the only option.
