Cl63 Amg

fuel consumption around 25mpg? is this for real!

So what was a 2002 AMG 63 engine then? An over-bored 55 V8?

Nope, it's a V12 - and it's very very rare indeed. Just awesome.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_CL-Class

The CL63 AMG is the rarest CL of all. It was produced only in November 2001, and just 26 examples were ever built for sale. The V12-powered CL63 AMG was only sold in Europe and Asia. Mercedes-Benz never offered the CL63 for sale, all were sold exclusively through AMG with a base price of £110,000

It was a special order V12. They run on 6-cylinders when pootling around - though 25mpg is optimistic!

Unusual to see an ultra-rare M-B version that was actually available in RHD!

I must be missing something here though, based on the performance figures on that Wikipedia page the CL63 is slower (less powerful) than the CL600, CL55, and CL65 ... so why would it be desirable?

Wikipedia isn't exactly accurate. It's based on people submitting their own information. The later CL600 is a twin turbo, the CL55 also got a Kompressor so it would be less powerful than these, but not the original models in 2000.

It still seems to me that this car is ultra-rare only because it was superceded very quickly by three faster models when the CL range was revised at the end of 2002. So not quite the 'beast' it's made out to be, and it doesn't have the 500 bhp stated in the Ebay ad ... more like 440?

I think you're looking at it the wrong way. It's rare like an R129 SL55!

Ah but the SL55 is the 2nd fastest R129, whereas the CL63 is only the 4th fastest W215!

Hmmn not quite! The SL73 was the fastest R129, then the SL60, then the SL55.

The options on this special order were also much greater.

Interesting, thanks. I assumed the 55 was the same supercharged unit that went into the R230, I guess it was naturally aspirated then?

The first 5.5 M113s were NA - I think the W210 got it first late '98. The Kompressor versions appeared in 2001.

Very,Very,Very Tempted!!!
