Hi all i have a Mercedes cla200 2014 1.8 diesel automatic with the 724 gearbox and I’m looking to swap out my gearbox for a used one and so I am hoping someone can help with a couple of things.

I am hoping with the correct gearbox that I can simply swap out my original TCU into the used one and away i go into the sunset.

I can get hold of one with exact part number
A2463708602
But the (what I think) gearbox code is slightly different…. Mine is 724003 and the used one is 7240022. Also the used one is from a 1.6 petrol and mine is 1.8 diesel.

Please can anyone confirm anything here.
Would be greatly appreciated.
Will add picture of my original gearbox numbers.
Thanks

You'll need to use a replacement transmission with the same code as your current one (724.003). You'll have issues using a different code.
I doubt the petrol one will fit a diesel as the mating holes beween the transmission and engine are almost certainly in different places.

What's wrong with your current transmission?
It may well be cheaper to refurbish the gearbox you already have.

Thanks buddy my original dual clutch is gone and Mercedes wants extortionate amount to replace and apparently you need a special tool to change dual clutch that only Mercedes have.

If I could get one with the same code 724.003 then would i be able to just swap original conductor plate with TCU to the used gearbox and it will work? Thanks

Do you have a Mercedes specialist nearby that could do the work? The labour alone would be half that of a main dealer.
I'm afraid my knowledge of transmissions isn't good enough to advise whether your plan would work or not.
Someone with more expertise may be able to answer.

Was hoping one of the geniuses here would know something

You don't need special tool to change dual clutch, ive done a few and it's not hard to do. Just need to remove gearbox

Oleks1992 thanks that’s brilliant info. I only thought that because of what I been reading on different forums.
Can you give me any info on these codes as I’ve had the TCU out and sent it away but apparently they cannot be repaired it’s the VGS-FDCT and after reading different forums it seems as though the actual clutch is gone and not the TCU

Was driving along when suddenly no gears now not selecting any gears at all.
Is there any way of determining if it is the actual clutch?
Thanks again

Yeah it's hard to say without driving it with xentry plugged it, bit it does seem like dual clutch unit is at fault though.
Id also check condition of the flywheel while gearbox is out too, as splines usually fail where dual clutch unit locates into

Oleks1992 thanks wouldn’t be able to drive with xentry because it doesn’t move, won’t select any gears at all, but will check dmf while gearbox out for missing teeth.
Sorry to be a pain but you have definitely done these dual clutch on a 724 gearbox, fwd 2014 model 1.8 diesel with the VGS-FDCT tcu inside?
If so how simple is it to remove the dual clutch? What would I have to do? Thanks very much for the advice

Yeah it's not hard to replace dual clutch unit, just becareful putting the cover back on for the clutch unit as you can damage the seal. Make sure you also replace fluid and both filters too.

Thanks again buddy, once I have gearbox off is it just a case of sliding whole dual clutch unit off ( I have added a picture to confirm what I am assuming is the clutch unit) then removing circlips to split clutch unit to replace clutch plates?

or do I change whole dual clutch unit?

Thanks.

Yeah correct, getting the cover back on is the trickiest parts without damaging the seal

Sorry for coming across thick as…… but do you mean that I “split “ my unit to change plates
No, you take the cover off in the bell housing and the clutch pack is under it
brilliant thanks.
So if I can get hold of a complete unit as in the picture I posted then I can just slide off old unit and slide new one on job done?

Yeah and you'll need a new cover that goes over it too as it works like a seal

Thanks so much for all your help Oleks1992 can I just ask two more things please….

Do I need to fill any gearbox oil into the clutch unit before putting gearbox back on ( like with a torque converter) or will it fill itself when I fill gearbox?

And i can’t seem to find WHERE to purchase just a clutch pack rather than the whole reconditioned unit and so is it only main dealer or do you know anywhere that supplies just the clutch pack?

Thanks so much for your help and support.

I would just fill the transmission through filler tube as required as it'll make a huge mess if you prefill the clutch unit. I always use merc dealer for parts like this. Can't take a gamble on cheap alternatives.

You’re a top fella and I wish you all the best.
Gotta say I’m a bit concerned about splitting the actual unit as I can see the big circlip to remove clutch unit from gearbox but when I zoom in on pictures of clutch unit I cannot see a way of splitting? To insert new clutch plates. Is there a circlip on the rear that I will see once removed?
Thanks

Once you take big circlip off and take clutch cover off and whole clutch pack comes out in one unit. Here's picture for a better view
