Clanging door hinge

Hi all,

This good old 300TD is giving me some trouble today. I've noticed that the front right door opens with two fairly loud clonks. It comes from the rod that holds the door to its maximum open position.

Apparently something has broken or worked itself loose in there.

I need to inspect the internals of this door. Is there a way to cleanly remove the door padding/handholds/crank without breaking everything in the process?

Thanks for any help.

Chris

Could it be the 'check strap' that you're referring to?

They are a fairly common item to fail - fortunately they're cheap to replace :)

Definitely the check strap get it sorted ASAP I ignored mine on the CLK and it failed denting the doorskin outwards and then its a major drama, easy fix as it is now

Yes I need to do it but I suppose it takes the door's inside padding to come off and I don't want to break everything.

Anybody knows if there is a procedure or a way to do it without damage?

I forget: it's a 1988 W124 300TD.

I had this issue and solved it by tightening the bolts holding the hinge to the car which had worked a little loose. Worth a look before getting into any expense.
