Anyone know of any broker/company that will not quote a ridiculous premium for a classic car (ie. one over 10 years old) simply because it's kept in a secure (electric gates, video cameras) private underground garage for 85 cars (those that many blocks of flats have) instead of your very own garage to which no one else has access? The quote for a 92 R129 500 SL was £400 for the latter and £1100 for the former.

Thanks all,
SEAN

Hi Sean I guess you have already tried Norton Insurance on 0121 246 6060 or http://www.heritage-quote.co.uk
They have insured my '93 Porsche for just over £200 and 1500 miles limit but I did specify I had my own garage though. May be worth checking with them as they do seem to be cheap. You just need to be over 30.

Good luck,
Steve

My sister moved last month and encountered the same problem with her BMW.

Her insurance company reckoned the secure parking area under a block of 20 apartments is enough of a "public parking place" not to qualify for any form of garaging or even an off road parking discount.

Lancaster Classic Car insurance. best and cheapest for me by far.

the very people who made the distinction between private garage and secure underground private car park for apartment residents

The highest permissible mileage I have been able to find on classic car insurance is 6000 miles. Does anyone know of any company/borker which allows more?

I have so far tried:

Peter Best (6k)

Norton/Heritage (5k)

CaroleNash (won't allow 11 year old W124 estate as a classic)

Lancaster (6k) and uncompetitive in any event

Richards and Hoskins (01277 206911) (5k and by far the cheapest at £192, and the next cheapest being Peter Best at £340 for 6k).

Firebond (10k but very uncompetitive)

Thoughts/suggestions anyone?

Thanks mucho.

Have you tried Footman James? Not sure of their contact details.

They check your mileage if you have a claim!

Try Classicline

They were fine when I used them.

I have insured my 1961 E-Type roadster with Footman James, agreed value, unlimited mileage, breakdown cover inc European, includes windscreen cover for £230 fully comp.
Should the car be stolen recovered or written off they give you chance to buy it back many others won't do that.
They also cover modern drivers as well.

how do they check your mileage when you make a claim? do they insist on having your service paperwork as proof of past mileage???

As part of the agreed value on my car I have to pay a club like The Jaguar Enthusiasts club (JEC) to have an inspection carried out every two years. On the submittal notice I give, along with a detailed write up and photo's I record the mileage. OK you can lie to them but when its a car of some value whats the point. Doesn't really matter since mine is unlimited mileage.

You can bring this across to your daily driver insurance, they ask you how many miles you do year if its more than the usual you pay more because you are a higher risk.

They will want to see your last MOT certificate.

The independent assessor records the mileage in the event of a claim. Every year I need to send film photographs of the odometer as part of a series for an agreed value.

tried Footman James .. no joy, car has to be at least 15 years old.

Classicline won't quote for an 11 year old W124 estate either.

I believe Peter Best are looking into insuring vehicles that aren't stored in a garage. You can also extend the mileage during the year (at a cost) even though there is a limit to begin with.

Having read the previous posts, I don't know if this is much help to you, but just for the record, AON Insurance offer a product called "Modern Classics" for cars over 10 years old. But I think the car has to be a second car and mileage is again restricted. Plus points are you don't need any no claims bonus (which might usually be assigned to your main car only) and they don't insist on the car being garaged.

I used them for my modified 1994 MR2 turbo which I sold a few months back. The car was on my driveway and mileage was 3k per annum. Premium was around £270. They may quote for slight higher mileage than this but, if you are trying to insure a car as a 'classic' then you are likely to find that options are going to be limited for the kind of mileage you are talking about.
