SL60 AMG (Now sold)
Hi, our SL60 is now over 15 years old which I believe means we might be able to insure it on a classic policy. The potential problems are that although we don't do a lot of mileage in it, it is insured for business use and though just like being on a drive, it is classed as being parked on the street.

Given it's rarity and value I would also prefer to have an agreed value.

I could do with you recommending a few decent classic car policy providers and/or brokers for me to start ringing around.

Thanks

Dan

Peter best. Footman James. Heritage

I have 2 policies with peter best. I think all of the providers would cover your requirements

Hi,
Feel free to give us a try at Adrian Flux if you like. If you wanted to PM me your details I'd be happy to arrange for one of my quotes team to give you a call back.
Regards,
Dan.

I don't think age matters though. I remember you got your car soon after me. Mines a 2001my. I think it's when the model was produced from that counts. The reason I chose Peter Best was that they were the only ones to get back to me when I emailed them. I have 3 other named drivers and didn't have time to make the same tedious call to each insurer so i emailed a few companies the same email with everyone's details. If you have the time then calling is better.

Dan, having been with AF before I tend to try you (not personally) every time I renew but lately you've not been competitive. I'd be happy to email details if you provide pm me your email address.

Never understood the '15+' thing with classics? Depends from one company to another - my CLK55 has always been on classic since I bought it nearly four years ago - it's a 2001 car and was seven and a bit years old at the time :)

Peter Best were very competitive for me and seem to have very good customer service - last year I think it came to around £220 fully comp which I feel is good value for the car/my age/location etc.

Thanks for that AF. Waste half an hour of my time. The first thing I said was I am interested in a classic/agreed valuation policy but am not sure whether I qualify due to the points mentioned in this post. The guy comes back with a standard quote for pretty much double my renewal premium and says he can't get classic quotes for the reasons I mentioned. In other words he almost certainly knew that straight away but made me endure the process anyway. Unfortunately this does not surprise me.

I use Footman James... They try it on every year with the renewal but it only takes a phone call.

Footman James said no as if business use is included the restriction on total mileage is 3,000. Years ago I owned a highly miodified Mk1 Golf which had an agreed value on it and no restrictions and it was pretty cheap. Surely there must be an insurer out there who is a bit more flexible? I'm guessing the problem is probably the tick box quote procedures rather than individual underwriting.

Hi

As a Broker we have a panel of Insurers. We need to take all of the details to refer to them and see if we have a scheme that offers you the cover you want.

I'm sure the clerk was trying to do his best for you.

Sorry we couldn't offer a competitive quote this year.

Thanks

Dan

Except for that it was a classic/agreed valuation policy I asked for so I could have been told I won't qualify as I explained the potential issues straight away. Footman James immediately concentrated on the potential issues I raised so as not to waste my time with the full process if I wasn't going to qualify.

Oh well, no joy. The recommended brokers and a couple of others were very helpful but it turns out that some would allow one or other of the matters that tend to cause me issues with classic/agreed valuation policies but none would accept all of them.

One thing I did spot with ordinary insurance was with regards the Admiral policy wording on market value. It refers to similar make, model, age, mileage etc etc rather than of the same make and model and similar age, mileage etc.

As well as potentially meaning they could view an SL500 as similar when deciding value I wonder what they would consider a similar make to Mercedes!

It looks like we'll be sticking with our current standard insurer for the time being.
