Ive been trying to source a set of old Black 'classic' style plates for my brothers 1969 280S as it currently has standard White & Yellow plates.

Currently I have only found www.fancyplates.co.uk but they only sell them in plastic, not metal orignals.

Although the car is 1969, it was only registered over here in 1981 so we wont be able to get them over the counter, only the white/yellow ones. (Fancyplates require no ID).

Anyone have any idea's?- Must be a metal plate

Karl ,

I think my local motor factors do them (THI Teddington) ...

I'll check with them later ...

Sorry to hi jack the thread - if I wanted to fit black plastic number plates with silver lettering on to a non classic car (which fancy plates supply) would it be illegal?

Unfortunately, YES.......Having said that I have had black metal plates on my black w202 for around 9 months and (touch wood) have not been stopped yet.

Iv also had an MOT done with them on. The garage passed it without an advisory, but did mention that they are illegal on post '74 cars.

I just buy the thick double sided number plate sticky pads from Halfords. It sits fine as the pad is deeper than the old mounts.

ah yes, i use the thin ones normally, forgot you could buy the thick ones... cheers

Otherwise use 3-4 thin ones stuck on each other....

I have bought a roll of 3M tape, was working out too expensive from Halfords. (i used to change my car 3 times a year!)
