Hope this may help others, as it took me a week or so to fix.
My wife has just taken delivery of a 59 plate CLC 220 CDI with Audio 20 with built in bluetooth.
She has an Iphone 4, and it should pair with audio 20 and work seamlessly.
The Audio 20 worked fine with my 4s, and another Iphone 4 that i tested it with, but it just would not pair with hers.
So first of all, I upgraded the IOS to the latest release (lets just say it was a couple of versions behind), and I was now able to pair the phone with the car, but the bluetooth connection was horrible, and it was impossible to have a conversation with anybody over an unstable connection, and a large amount of crackle/static.
I did a lot of apple forum reading, and found a suggestion to reset the phone back to factory settings, and try the phone with the car before loading anything to it. (Do not restore from backup it said), as potentially one of the apps may be interfering with the bluetooth.
I was not keen to do it quite like this as I would lose all the text messages etc, and would need to mess about copying them etc.
So I removed all of the APPS via Itunes, and then tried again with the car, and Bingo, it worked as it should.
I then resynced the apps back with the phone, and it still worked. So she was happy, although I cannot fully explain which app was corrupting it.
Hope this may help someone in the future.
EDIT: Apparently this fix is valid with other bluetooth devices where the crackling/static occurs as well, e.g. Headsets not just Audio 20.
