cleaning calipers

can anyone recommend anything to get the crud build up off calipers? I've get a 2ndhand set for the Nissan but want to clean them up before fitting them on.

caliper cleaning

in the past ive used a small wire brush the type you use on suede shoes copper type bristles.

You can get a pack from Halfords that has a nylon and two different metal brushes in it. I bought this specifically for cleaning calipers but never used them because the wheel bolts rusted in place. I've since had the bolts sorted but never got around to cleaning the calipers. It's on "the list" though

Just buy a can of brake cleaner and use a paintbrush.
