Clearing Snow and Ice

I have a large lambs wool wash mit for washing the car and everytime I use it the wife says it looks like I'm washing the car with a car. Good job you can't see the car from the road for the wall otherwise someone might call the RSPCA :)

If I'm not mistaken, having heard articles on the TV and Radio, but we HAVE to clear the snow from our cars and in particular the roof.

Because, if we are caught driving with with snow on the roof, it's a 3 point penalty and a £60 fine.

Grateful for comments if this is true.

So the downtrodden motorist now has to risk damaging his car or face further taxation/fines. Just think of the CO2 emissions and fuel wastage if the car was sat ticking over to warm up the car sufficient let the snow flow off.

Sorry, rant over, must have World Cupitus.

Yeahhhh what sort of idiot would do something like that!

5 hours digging and shoveling today and my car is finally free.

Haven't moved it yet as I don't actually need to go anywhere until work on Monday but at least it's free!

It's currently raining here in Sheffield and is forecast to be like that all evening so should melt a lot more.

I have a full tank of diesel as I haven't been able to go anywhere all week and only filled up on Monday, and went to the supermarket on Tuesday so all is well here.

If you were THAT worried about the effect of the snow and ice on your car then it would surely be in a garage, wouldn't it ?

Slight thaw here this afternoon so I took the opportunity to clear the cars off the drive and cleared all the snow and ice from the tarmac.

-8C expected tonight .............

Not sure if my car has suffered any scratches - as it had warmed up a bit today I simply pushed the show and ice ofof the car. Hopefully it glided on a layer of water and did no damage.

On the plus side it's taken the dirt with it and the bonnet and roof have never been so clean :)

Yes it would.....if there was a garage to put it in!

No matter what I try to use, it's always my sleeve that does the clearing!

And yep, remove anything you might want from the car before the snow comes. And while your path is clear, if you want out for anything - go now before more snow arrives and you have the digging to do all over again.
This weather sure makes life hard work. I had to un-freeze a drain just to empty the bath this afternoon!

I can't imagine how all the areas in the UK who have snow they aren't used to are going to cope when it thaws. Expecting some flood stories...

Apparently we are due no more snow here now (Sheffield) for the forseeable. However we are due hard frosts and jolly cold days and nights, so ice will be a familiar sight.

I think you are right in that the snow should now be behind us but they are saying that it is going to get really cold again next week so what we do have left will freeze over. I ventured out today and nearly got stuck trying to turn back into my road....Wont be doing that again until the back roads are a lot clearer.

Total thaw here in South Beds. Everything nice and wet and ready for the freeze tonight! Some nice slippery roads to look forward to in the morning! Should have a nice drive down to my Dads in Wembley

5 degrees today and a lot more has melted. Pavements and back roads still completely covered though.

Used a full bag of grit doing a route for my car up the hill onto the road. Dug it yesterday, gritted today.

Ventured out and all main roads are fine. A couple of car parks were bad but otherwise all fine on the roads.

-10 predicted for here tonight so will be really icy in the morning.

Aye, a cold night going to be tonight I think. Minus 3 here and its not even properly dark yet. I bet it will drop at least a degree with every hour....

Just take it to the local petrol station and jet wash it off with the hot water option if it has it. My local BP station has a good jet wash so I use that.

Otherwise like others have said, just take the top layer off and leave the rest to melt itself.

My car was relatively clean this morning after the snow was cleared off and took most of the dirt with it.

However after a bit of a run to top the battery charge back up the front looks like I have been off-roading in it!

Might need to visit the jetwash every few days at this rate to stop the salt eating it away!

A bit worried on the side roads near me as although car tracks have been made in it, my car is low so I have hit the snow/ice in the middle with my bumper/underside!
