As the title suggests, is it possible to take a digital climate control unit from a car and put it into another of the same series & vintage that is equipped with standard air con?

If so, how time-consuming & expensive, assuming the work is carried out by a trained mechanic.

I accept that the centre console housing would have to go across too.

TIA.

On my C-Class, the control panel can be replaced, but it is cosmetic only and will not have the added functionality.

I have been told that it would be a major undertaking requiring removal of the dash and sourcing expensive bits.

As above, the bit you see is the control, you need almost all new behind the dash.
Stepper motors, wiring harness, control module etc.

If you have a donor car then dash out in both and swap the heater.

I am in the mid's of doing this in my Vito.

On a newer Mercedes this may be possible as the HVAC systems are usually fitted to cars in one piece. On older cars there will be various vacuum controls and piping in the engine bay which will be a major headache.
