CLK 230K Possible BAS / ASR Problem, braking at random

Hi,

I have a 2001 CLK 230 Kompressor which has done just over 100,000 miles, The car is in generally good condition and passed a full M.O.T in mid July.

However, since then it developed an odd fault - whilst driving the traction control light would suddenly start pulsing and the brakes would be applying themselves - seemingly in union with the light, This would only last briefly and then the BAS / ASR warning light would come on (The computer would not display a fauly though), Then the problem would stop.

When stopping and restarting the car all dashboard lights would go off and the process would repeat itself all over again.

This happened a few weeks ago and happened about 5-6 times in a day (every journey) so I took it to an independant garage who cleared the fault code memory (none seemed to relate directly to this fault) and tested it daily for a repeat occurrence - none occurred so a week later I collected the car and all was fine.

Now its started again, only intermitendly and seemingly only when the wife is in the car with me.

I've read about a lot of BAS / ASR faults but nothing quite like this, does anyone have any ideas that can shed some light on this before I bit the bullet and take it to main dealer?

Thanks

Darren

Hi,

All tyres are standard size (on standard size wheels) - I cant remember the exact sizes but they are all matching pirelli p6000s. I can check the details if you think this may help?

The pressures should be o.k, but come to think of it I've not checked them in a while - Do you think this could be affecting it?

Thanks for the speedy response

It sounds like the ASR system thinks that there is a wheel spinning at a different speed to the others causing the ASR to activate.

Could it be an abs ring fault?

Hi,

Would an ABS ring fault show up if I were to get it star diagnosed again? When I took it to the garage originally a number of stored faults showed up but no ABS ring fault although I had a feeling it would be something to do with the ABS / BAS (To be honest I dont really know where one stops and the other starts).

So, Can these be cleaned up to help them along? or is it a case that if its broken it needs to be fixed?
