CLK 270
Hello everybody, I would appreciate a bit of advice if possible ....... I have a CLK 270 CDI. Just after Xmas I had the battery replaced by the AA ............. The following day I noticed there were some wires trapped in the Bonnet shut .... obviously the AA mechanic had not routed the cables correctly after he had replaced the battery and slammed the bonnet shut trapping the wires......... I opened the bonnet and put the cables back where they looked like they should go, closed the bonnet and thought nothing more of it ....... a couple of weeks later I started getting an intermittent charge fault visit workshop light come up on the dashboard ..........Last week I had the car serviced by a German car specialist who told me I had an intermittent fault with my alternator and needed a new alternator ... quoted me £500 ......... Today I've taken the car to have a new alternator fitted by a different garage, they inform me that the alternator is perfectly OK and is charging perfectly well even when the warning light comes on ........... consequently the alternator change has been aborted ......... I'm now thinking one of the trapped wires may have been damaged and it's that that is registering the fault.... any other ideas suggestions
Thanks in advance .... Ian

Can you post a photo of the wire? Is it a loom that is easily replaceable? What make and model is the new battery? And, has the poly belt been checked to ensure it is not slipping?

Hi Mark, thanks for your reply, Battery is a Bosch 100ah ............ Light comes on Typically when decelerating or braking, or at constant speeds mainly under 40mph ......... very rarely comes on at Motorway speeds ........... There's plenty of charge in the Battery, always turns over nicely 1st thing in the morning. I'll photograph the wires and upload it when I get it back this afternoon.

I think the wires you are referring to by the bonnet strut are for the washer jets . Pop a picture on just to confirm this but that's what I have in my mind. Sounds like the regulator pack on the back of the alternator isnt right or the alternator is intermittent faulty as when at high motorway speeds the belt is spinning the alternator quicker. If you go into the workshop menu in the cluster you should be able to see what the current is positive is charging and negative is discharging

Could be the alternator, or could be an issue with the poly belt... it might be slipping on deceleration.

If it's the alternator, then perhaps it wasn't charging the old battery properly which will explain the link between the two faults.

Also, what was the Ah rating of the old/original battery - the same?

I've photographed the loom but its saying file is too big ! ...... having said that ....... all the wires are leading to the washer jets, so I reckon you're right ...........If the alternator is faulty, how come it's producing 14.8 v when the warning light illuminates on the dash ? ......... MarkJay .......... How would the Polybelt be slipping under deceleration .........surely it's not under any load ? and what is the procedure to interrogate the charging system using the steering wheel buttons ? Thanks in advance everybody

Can you take a look at the battery itself and eliminate loose battery connections at the terminals? Did the AA tighten up the terminals correctly or are they loose and can move under deceleration?

To me, a flashing light would suggest a loose connection somewhere in these system and I would eliminate this first.
