The gearbox in my car has a major problem.
I took it to the main dealer who wanted to charge me £1600 to replace the electrohydraulic control unit and oil.
I decided to take it an independent transmission specialist who told me that the glycol from the transmission cooling radiator had got into the gearbox and had damaged the valve plate and torque converter and that the gearbox would need to be completely rebuilt and a new radiator fitted...total price £3,500 + VAT.
It would then need to be re programmed to the car.

I can buy a gearbox and torqueconverter from a breaker for £750 + VAT. Does anybody know if the gearbox can be fitted to my car and then reprogrammed to my car so that it will operate?

Any comments will be appreciated.

Sorry mate but there seems to be more than an implication that the radiator has been breached (leaked) into the gearbox oil which has caused the problem and this seems to be a known issue on some cars. You really do need the expertise of a good independent to keep your costs to a minimum, to this end I would advise that you post your location to get recommendations of good independents in your area.

Doesnt make any sense.

The 7 speed is not the one that suffers from glycol issues so id be suspicious about the transmission specialists - they probably took one look and mistook it for the older model and then did what all transmission specialists want to do - quote to replace the box entirely, which is rarely needed, but covers their back in case of other issues.

The dealer was probably right as these have a common issue with the electro plate but as of recently the electrical plate can be changed by itself without the hydraulic valve body.. This part is around £250 + oil & coding etc... So even at a dealer a £6-700 job at most.
