On my previous Mercedes C55 and previous C220 CDI when the Gearbox was in C mode it felt like it pulled off in 2nd gear yet put it in S and it pulled from 1st gear.

With the 7G box on my CLK 320 CDI it doesn't seem to matter whether it's in C or S mode as it always pulls off in 1st.

Is this a fault or normal for the car?

How do you know it's pulling off in first?

To be honest mine is usually in S so I couldn't say what it normally does in C.

As it feels and sounds the same in C or S when pulling away from a standstill..

Is this normal?

From My experience when cold and in S there a bigger thump than when in C. Very very smooth when warmed up and this only takes a few miles.

I not quite sure what your expectations are, but normally S/C modes would control when the gears change from 1st to 2nd i.e. higher revs. This may not vary much unless you boot it.

Well the main difference between C and S is that in S the car stays ina lower gear for longer so making for rapid progress,on my S320 it also firms up the ride, but must admit i keep mine in C most of the time, and yes mine starts off in 2 nd

I have a 2009 e320, see sig line.

In S the g/box isn't as smooth when cold, especially the down shift in lower gears 2 to 1 especially so. In C it does seem to pull away in 2nd although the difference isn't great. In C the cold downshift is smother and there's no jolt when coming to a stop I'd suspect that 2 to 1 downshift.

When warm its fine in S & C. TBH mine is in C most of the time, generally I'm not in rush and enjoy wafting along in MB splendour.
