My cats let go on Tuesday evening. Just happened out of the blue. No previous signs of letting go. Started the car in the evening and the rattle started. I was hoping it was the heat shield or one of the brackets loose. Following day I took my car to show my merc specialist mechanic. He confirmed my worst nightmare that it is the cats that are rattling. My heart sank. Couldn't believe it

Bought the cats from redirecting.... Brilliant service! £550 all in.

When having them fitted apparantly 2 of the Lamda sensors needed replacing costing around £100 each :(

Total cost of installation and sensors £300..

Expensive fix!

This car is costing me a fortune!

Since ownership I've spent money on a new ECU £1200 including fitting and then paid for a full service of £700 at the same time.

New rear springs, battery, need rear bushes to be replaced, thats another £250 & B service in june, plus £850 on the new cats. All this since October 2005.

Had a 3 series beemer before E36 318is, owned that for 4 years and apart from servicing I only replaced discs, pads and rear bushes.

I'm going to buy lexus next time. Fed up on expensive repairs. Yes I know it's a merc and ownership was never gonna be cheap but it's just problems after problems.

I'm hoping that I've now had most of the common faults fixed????

Have read that cars that only do low mileage have a tendency to failure of cats. I do 14 miles return journey a day and 3 miles of that is motorway.

Damn engine management light came on yesterday evening. Took the car back to the garage for a laptop diagnostic. Apperas the other 2 lambda sensors need replacing. Hopefully this will sort the problem out. Feel abit relieved that the 2 that were replaced were definately faulty.
