help required if you can,
my 98 clk320 convertible has started to cut out or not start at all for the first few trys. had maf replaced a couple of months back for erratic revs and was fine since. but now it sometimes starts then stops straight away from cold. dealer had it for 4 days and said throttle body, 2 grand to buy and fit ! so i bought a second hand one for 50 quid but same issue.local garage had it and replaced fuel filter, relay and pump, also cps at my request. no codes reported but it can tick over perfectly for an hour in his garage then suddenly cut out. most times it starts straight away but some times it just dies every time you try to start it, whether hot or cold. Garage says he can always get it started again with easy start but i dont know what that proves. cant risk driving it now.
it still seems like fuel to me but ive heard on here it could be immobilser, ecu or harness ? any ideas what to do now ?

I would recommend taking it to a trusted independant specialist otherwise you'll be throwing money at it forever.

Tell us where you live and someone will recommend one near to you.

If it always starts on easystart, then its not going to be electrical.

i live in coventry, main dealer had it for 4 days , think they said throttle body knowing i wouldnt pay for that and take it away! i heard there were some ex merc engineers at a garage in coventry but the numbers dont ring out for them in lythalls lane, maybe theyve gone.

ive replaced the fuel filter, relay and pump, is there something electrical that could be telling them to turn off ?

nice one i'll give them a call, might be able to risk driving it that far.

Crankshaft or camshaft positioning sensor? But that won't equate to starting again with easy start :(

Did you fit a cheap MAF by any chance?

Did you fit a decent brand of MAF? I've seen ebay ones that give starting issues, but once running perform ok.

I would add to the above. Sounds very much like a maf. They are usually fine after a few minutes

originally bought a cheap maf from ebay, didnt make any difference so bought decent one from autoparts for 90 quid and it fixed the issue of erratic revs a couple of months ago.if i disconnect the maf now the fan gets faster and faster. crank position sensor was also a bosch one. havent replaced the cam sensor tho

crank position sensor usually fails when hot, my car sometimes wont start from cold, it fires up then cuts out straight away. other times it starts first pull and will tick over perfectly for half an hour then cut out,but will start again straight away without cooilig down.
