From another thread, I am replacing my gearshift paddles on my steering wheel.

The dealer has refused to do the change because 'they do not have instructions on how to do it' so I am going to attempt it myself. I have quite happily removed airbags/wheels from previous cars but I have no idea how to do it on my CLK (W209).

Is it purely the two Torx screws accessed from the back of the wheel? or is there something more to it? I don't really want a face full or airbag. Is there any strict procedure to avoid throwing fault codes?

Simon

I normaly disconnect the battery. Watch out as the wheel may lock and you may need to turn the steering at one point to undo the airbag.

Only re-connect the battery once everything is in place ie wiring etc.

If you forget then the SRS light will stay on.

Mmm, so I got a T30 Torx screwdriver and it doesn't fit.

I could swear somewhere on here it said T30, but I have searched and cannot find it - am I going mad?

yes it should be T-30. it will be a bit fiddily to get it in the bolt correctly. make sure you dont round it though as this will spell disaster!

i find it best to use a proper complete T-30 screwdriver rather than one that has the connectable bit on the end as it almost always falls off inside the airbag hole.

OK, I may give it another go - but it defo felt like it was too large to get into the nut.

Thanks for the info, and warning!!

Yes, should be a Torx 30 (was when I did my W202)
I ended up buying the torx bit from MB. It's long and thin so perfect for the job.

DO NOT round off the torx head !!

I had problems removing mine and found that a 5/32 allen key was better at getting my bolts out. Apparently the Merc T30 is better than the Draper set I bought. You may need other torx drivers for the bits inside, depending on what you're doing.

Good luck - all this of course at your own risk !
