In my hunt for a CLK cabrio I have come across three and would appeciate others comments on the pro's and cons of each. Price not an issue.

1). CLK 320 cabriolet 2001 Y plate 25,000 miles silver with Black leather, heated seats, memory seats, wind deflector, rain sensor, CD changer, 1 owner

2). CLK 320 cabriolet, 2001 51 plate, 23,000 miles, tansanite blue, quartz (grey??) leather,Blue hood, no extras other than met paint.

3). CLK230 kompressor (last edition model), 2002 02 plate, 21,500 miles, heated seats, parktronic, climate, leather auto silver with black sude/leather, 17" final edition alloys.

I'd be interested to hear peoples opinions of running and maintaining these (anything particular to watch for?), also desireability of colour/resale value etc.

Cheers

i'd say its either 1 or 3..... number 2 no good as no extras....

3 sounds the best spec but not the desirable V6 engine..... but i think if u were not bothered about the engine size, go for 3.

I'd go for 3 - the kompressors do fly... and it is nicely speced.

Cabriolets are a little slower than coupes, Id go for the !, the 3.2 but then 3 is a final edition, take them both for a drive if your happy with 3 go for it.

Went for the tansanite blue one as its £500 cheaper, 6 months newer, lower miles. The only options I cant retro fit are heated seats and rain sensor.

yipppeeeeee here comes summer...........

Change of plan.......................

After seeing the tansanite blue one, I didnt like the interior colour scheme. The dealer concerned were fine about it and refunded my deposit.

Have gone for a Quartz blue elegance instead, 02 year, CLK320 cabriolet. Parktronic, Heated seats, folding mirrors, climate, Cd, memory seat etc No COMAND (yet!)

Roll on Friday when it arrives! :)

Well done. Orion Grey leather goes better with the blue than quartz. Parktronic is a must on these cars as well.

Check the boot lid for rust round the key hole, and check the roof closes properly - especially the rear latch (it can rattle).

Take it for a test drive and chuck it HARD round a bend - will soon show up any rattles. It will drive you nuts unless you find them.

Clarky.

One final q - if price not an issue why those three ? I know there are better spec'd ones out there....

When I said price not an issue,I meant that within my budget, these all popped up. They were all different prices but all within the budget so price between them was not a deciding factor. I will probably keep the car forever. Looking at old E class convertibles, any Mercedes drop top seems to hold its value well if looked after and the miles kept down.

As for Spec, there is only really the Rain sensor, Xenons and COMAND that it hasn't got. COMAND and Xenons can be retro fitted! :)

I will be sad to see the ML go as it has been a great vehicle. It has never let me down and proved very useful for its family/load carrying capabilities. I no doubt the dealer concerned will make at least £3,000 on it!

Sounds like a nice car you have gone for there Alfie, will we get to see it at Matts place then ? ;)

glad your pleased with the final choice, my dad has a CLK, and loves it to bits !!

can't think of a better car for the summer

Hi Howard,

Thanks. Cant wait to get it. My first CLK back in 1999 was the same colour and I vowed they day I drove it out of the showroom that one day I'd have a 320 in the same colour with a soft top! I will indeed be bringing it to Matt's place as and when the arrangements for the GTG are finalised. Just hope I'm not on hols then!

Didnt your father buy that CLK430 you mentioned on a thread sometime ago?

Yes , dad got the 430, Azurite blue, 19" BBS split rims  loves it, spent the first week just hooning it around like a 17 year old who had just passed his test .......

still won't put me on the insurance though ...... ;)

Heated seats and the rain sensor can be retrofitted fairly easily. The only options you have to worry about are aircon/climate and xenons. Xenons aren't too bad but headlamp wash requires a new bumper if it's not already installed and the suspenion squat sensors for a proper oem job are a serious operation.

Hi Shude,

What is involved in retrofitting the rain sensor?

Thanks

Glue to windscreen, plug cable into dome light.

That's basically it. May require a new windscreen(!) depending on the shaded area at the top, may require a few minutes on the star diagnostic at the stealership. The sensor itself is £90-100.

That's how it works on the W202/203/210 and others. The W208 is probably very similar.

So the sensor is somehow prewired through to the dome light already? All I need is the sensor and no fiddly routing of a cable down through to behind the dash?

Sounds simple!

yeah it will be just like the auto-dimming mirror - there is a plug for it in the dome light.

i tried to retrofit one when my screen was replaced but nasty RAC windscreens wouldnt fit a rain sensor screen on the sly

I have a VIN ready for when I want my screen replacing, I reckon if I'm careful the "correct" screen will be ordered :)

when i had to have my screen replaced due to stone chip, i said to the RAC windscreens guy if they could order me a screen with rain sensor....he said your car doesnt have a rain sensor, i said i know but can it be ordered anyway, and then he started saying "u cant just replace the screen and the wipers will work, it requires electrics too", i said "i know, just fit the screen", he said its not worth it as it cant be done. at this point i gave up trying to convince him as he sounded like he wouldnt bend the rules and it could cause more hassle than what its worth....
