Ive gone off the idea of buying an 500 SL because to get a very good one I’m knocking on the door of £12000 which is too much to spend because I want to keep the Porsche and the Jaaag.

So, my head has ruled and a CLK is going to join the fold.

Ideally I want a large petrol engine, either the 280 or the 350 but I’ve been reading about the issue with balancer shafts?? So am I better off with a smaller engine? I’m not worried about big speed, low down grunt and noise. This is a car for posing and maybe a trip to my mums in La Rochelle late summer.

I fancy a black one but it must have a light coloured interior or a silver model with a grey interior. Electric seats are a must because my other cars have them and any other gadgets would be nice as well.

Max lay-out is going to be £6500

So you want my car then ! Mine is chromite black with sand leather. Looks lovely. Also used for posing and trips to family in Cognac...about an hour from La Rochelle.

I have the 350 on a 2008 car which avoids the balance shaft issue as the engine was out of the range. £6,500 should get you a later car but it may be a bit mileagey. The V6s are worth it imho but post 2005 equals £515 rfl per annum.

Prices seem to be all over the place. Low miles one owner cars are up at £10k plus but I’m not sure if they sell. I think £6,500 with some judicious haggling should get you something nice. There isnt much to go wrong on them over any other Mercedes of that era....just check the engine number if it’s a v6 and make sure the box and electrics all work as expected.
